GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Maverick redshirt freshman
McKenna Molder won both hurdling events as she and jumpers
Josie Coffey and
Kiana Jackson all set Colorado Mesa University women's track & field school records and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks to lead the Mavericks to seven event wins on Saturday at the Maverick Open, the first collegiate meet at CMU's new on-campus track and field complex.
Molder, the anchor leg on CMU's national indoor title winning 4x400-meter relay two weeks earlier, became the second fastest 100-meter hurdler in CMU history as she won that event in 14.63 seconds before coming back to dominate the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.82 to a full 1.2 seconds faster than the former CMU record of 1:02.02, which had been set in 2016 by Bacall Sterling. Molder now ranks sixth nationally with her altitude-adjusted time of 1:00.93.
Meanwhile, Coffey, an indoor national qualifier and second team USTFCCCA All-American, cleared 1.75 meters (5 feet 8 ¾ inches) in the high jump to smash the Maverick outdoor record of 1.68 meters (5-6), which had been held since 2014 by Quincey Pedersen. Coffey, a freshman, now sits third on the national performance list thus far in the 2021 outdoor campaign.
Jackson also took down another Sterling school-record in the triple jump. The CMU redshirt sophomore turned in a fifth-round effort of 12.37 meters (40-7), nearly six inches better than Sterling's 2016 record of 12.23 meters (40-1.5). In the process, she moved into a tie for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead and into a tie for third nationally.
Elsewhere, the Maverick women went 1-2-3-4 in the 100 meters and 1-2-4 in the long jump before winning the 4x400-meter relay to tally 133 ½ team points, just three shy of Western Colorado University, which claimed the 3-team meet with 136 ½. Westminster College was third with 52 points.
The Maverick men also had three NCAA qualifying marks and seven event wins on Saturday, including a national-leading, 1,500-meter effort from Tony Torres.
In the 100,
Sierra Arceneaux claimed victory in 11.90 seconds, just off her wind-legal personal-best of 11.87. Redshirt freshman
Shaya Chenoweth, who won the long jump, took second in 12.17 seconds and now ranks fourth in program history just one spot behind Arceneaux.
Haley Golden (12.38) and
Jordyn Pittman (12.43) were third and fourth and now occupy the final two spots in the Mavericks' all-time top 10.
Chenoweth turned in a mark of 5.63 meters (18-5.75) in the long jump and now ranks second in CMU history for that event.
Chian DeLoach took second at 5.58 meters (18-3.75) and is now fourth best in program history.
Kailey Paterson, competing unattached, was third at 5.34 meters (17-6.25) while
Kierra Arceneaux finished fourth with a leap of 5.33 meters (17-6).
In the 4x400-meter relay,
Sydney Trichler,
Jade Wimmer,
Sophie Lindauer and Pittman combined for a time of 3:53.63 to take over the No. 2 spot in program history.
Lindauer was also part of a strong team effort in the high jump, which saw six different Mavericks finish in the top seven places. Lindauer tied for second as she cleared 1.55 meters (5-1) to move into a tie for sixth in program history.
Waileia Edwards and indoor pentathlon school-record holder and all-American
Mica Jenrette also cleared the same height as they tied for fourth after missing on their first attempt at that height.
The Mavs were just as dominant in the 100-meter hurdles as
Averie Griffith (15.16) and Jackson (15.22) took second and third. In the process, they moved into the eighth and ninth positions, respectively, on the Mavs' all-time charts.
Griffith also posted a time of 1:06.80 in the 400-meter hurdles to move into the No. 8 spot in CMU history. She finished fourth on the day.
Elsewhere,
Ella Rosenkranz led the Mavericks in the 1,500 meters, taking sixth in 5:12.33 while Wimmer took second in the 400 meters at 59.09 seconds. Trichler was third in that event with a time of 59.29.
In the 800 meters,
Amber Valdez finished fifth at 2:18.37 to move into the No. 3 position in Maverick history for that discipline.
In the 200 meters,
Haley Golden finished third in 25.65 seconds to move into a tie for eighth in CMU outdoor history.
Freshman thrower
Meleeah Holmes-McKown finished third in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put. Her hammer mark of 43.03 meters (141-2) ranks her tenth in CMU history.
CMU throws coach
Chelsea Whalen, competing unattached, won the shot put with a mark of 15.42 meters (50-7.25).
Maison Tolle also made her Maverick debut on Saturday finishing third in the triple jump with a mark of 10.63 meters (34-10.5). She was sixth in the high jump at 1.50 meters (4-11).
