Hanson takes hurdles bronze as Torres breaks his own 3K record

CMU men score in six of Sunday's seven events to finish fifth

SPEARFISH, S.D.— A NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying and bronze-medal winning effort from sophomore Nate Hanson in the 60-meter hurdles and a school-recording setting 3,000-meter run from Tony Torres led the Colorado Mesa University men's indoor track and field team's effort on Sunday, the third and final day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday here at Black Hills State University's Donald E. Young Center Field House.

The Mavericks, heavily reliant on freshman, also scored team points in six of Sunday's seven events as they finished fifth in the final team standings with 67 points, their second highest total in program history.

The Mavericks claimed 11 of those points in the hurdles as Hanson finished in 8.19 seconds to move into the No. 2 position in Maverick history.  Freshman teammate Zayden Davis was fourth in 8.41 seconds.

In the 60 meters, freshman Beau Thornton took sixth in 6.95 seconds to move into a tie for sixth in program history.

Another freshman in Kelsey Montague then took seventh in the 400 meters, finishing in 50.93 seconds

In the 3K, Torres smashed his own school-record, finishing eighth in 8:38.01 to better his 15-day old Maverick standard of 8:47.51 by 9 ½ seconds.

The Mavericks also had a sixth place effort in the 4x400-meter relay as Ty Grant, Hanson, Jake Valdez and Montague posted a time of 3:27.72.

CMU also received a sixth place finish from Spencer Purnell in the triple jump, the lone field event of the day.  He jumped 14.47 meters (47 feet, 5 ¾ inches), just off his personal-best of 14.50 meters (47-7), set at last year's RMAC Championships.

The Maverick men won three events during the meet, a new program-record.  CMU's women also won a program-record five events and placed an all-time best second with 110 team points.
