BOULDER, Colo.— Freshman
Tony Torres and sophomore
Jerod Kuhn both went under four minutes in the 1,500 meters to lead a group of four Colorado Mesa University middle distance runners and two throwers to compete on Saturday at the Colorado Invitational.
Torres improved his No. 3 ranking in program history as he finished the metric mile in 3 minutes, 56.29 seconds while Kuhn became just the fourth Maverick to ever run the event in under four minutes as he finished in 3:58.74 to win his heat. They took 15
th and 22
nd respectively in the overall standings but were running separate sections.
With the altitude conversion, Torres' time (3:50.66) is just off the NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying standard of 3:50.52.
Trevor Smith also contested the event finishing 45
th in 4:07.01 and now ranks eighth in program history.
Meanwhile,
Marshall McKown took 12
th in the shot put and 13
th in the discus throw with marks of 14.46 meters (47 feet, 5 ¼ inches) and 43.75 meters (143-6), respectively.
Connor Scranton and
Ethen Besier also competed on Saturday. Scranton ran the 800 meters in 2:16.46 while Besier fouled on his attempts in the discus.
The Maverick Track & Field team had a much larger contingent competing in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday.
