COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University distance runner
Chase Brown and javelin throwers
Seth Sherwood and
Izaak Siefken were all voted on to the First Team Academic All-Rocky Mountain Conference Team and led a group of 25 Maverick men placed on the Academic Honor Roll for the recently completed outdoor track & field season.
The honors were announced on Thursday afternoon by conference officials.
The Maverick women also had two first team picks and a conference-leading 28 selections to the honor roll.
The Mavs' 53 total selections were also the most of any of the 15 RMAC institutions.
The first teams are selected by a vote of athletics communications directors from the conference membership based on a combination of athletic and academic accomplishments. To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have a 3.5 or higher GPA entering the season and be at their nominating institution for two consecutive semesters prior to the start of the season.
Those not selected for the first team were automatically placed on the honor roll, which requires a 3.3 or higher GPA, the use of season of eligibility and the residency requirement.
Brown, a redshirt sophomore from Bloomingdale, Michigan, earned his fourth career first team honor and his third of the 2024-25 academic year after also receiving the honor during the 2024 cross country season and the 2024-25 indoor track & field campaign. The civil engineering major holds a perfect 4.00 GPA and was also named as RMAC Summit Award Winner during both the indoor and outdoor seasons for having the highest GPA of any student-athlete competing at the conference championships.
During the outdoor season, Brown qualified for the RMAC Championship finals in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters and set career-best times of 4:00.60 and 15:06.22 to rank seventh (5K) and fifth (1500) in program history.
Sherwood, a business administration major with a 3.92 GPA, claimed the bronze medal and First Team All-RMAC honors with his third place finish in the javelin throw at the RMAC Championships. The redshirt sophomore out of Pueblo, Colorado, recorded a season-best mark of 56.16 meters (184-3) to do so.
He also earned Second Team All-RMAC honors in 2024 after taking sixth at the RMAC Championships with a career-best throw of 56.34 meters (184-10) to rank sixth in program history.
Siefken, a redshirt junior from Broomfield, Colorado, was the RMAC Champion in the javelin. He also set the Maverick program record of 64.83 meters (212-8) in the season-opening meet and ended up 23
rd on the NCAA Division II Championship Provisional Qualifying list, just one spot shy of a national meet selection. He recorded three wins and two runner-up finishes in his five meets this season after claiming the silver medal at the RMAC Championships in 2024. Academically, he holds a 3.68 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering.
