GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team ended the 2018-19 season on a high note as they dropped just one set in a 7-0 team victory over visiting and short-handed Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday here at the Elliott Tennis Center. The match was an unofficial consolation match of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament after both teams had dropped semifinals on Friday and was the final career match for seniors
Emily Beckley,
Georgia Hansen and
Taylor Hershey as well as
Kylie Simons, who was not in the lineup.
The Mavericks finished the year 8-17, posting three wins over the ThunderWolves (1-22) this month. CSU-Pueblo again fielded just a 5-player lineup and forfeited the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles match.
In doubles play,
Kristen Kirby and Beckley defeated Nia Matthews and Kali Hamilton, 6-2 in the No. 1 encounter after Hansen and freshman
Maike Waldburger had finished off a No. 2 victory over Sarah Megilligan and Emily Sproston, by a 6-3 margin.
Those victories allowed the Mavericks to take the doubles point for the fifth straight match.
In singles, Kirby won the rubber match of her season-long series with Matthews, taking a 7-5, 6-2 decision to give the Mavericks an early 3-0 team lead after Waldburger's forfeit victory.
Hershey then clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Katherine Ambrose in the No. 5 match before Beckley,
Rebecca Osterberg and Hansen all finished off the victory.
Beckley dropped a first-set tiebreaker, 7-5 to Hamilton in the No. 2 match but rallied for a 6-3 second win before winning 10 of the 15 points in the extended match tiebreaker.
Meanwhile, Osterberg and Hansen both won 6-1, 6-2 matches over Sproston and Megilligan in the No. 3 and 4 matches, respectively.
Beckley finishes her career with 113 victories, including 57 in doubles and 56 in singles. Hershey had 97 career triumphs, going 54-52 in singles. Hansen had 60 career wins.
On other courts, Dixie State University claimed the RMAC Tournament title with a 4-2 win over top-seeded and regular season RMAC Champion MSU Denver. The Trailblazers had edged the Mavericks by the same margin on Friday afternoon.
