GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won every set and cruised past a visiting and short-handed Colorado State University-Pueblo in a 7-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Tennis match-up on Friday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The win was the Mavericks' second straight and upped their overall record to 7-15. It was also their first RMAC win in three tries and locked up the No. 3 seed in next weekend's RMAC Tournament, which the Mavericks will host. They will play No. 2 seed Dixie State in next Friday's semifinal round after hosting the Trailblazers in a non-conference match at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
The ThunderWolves, playing with just five players against the Mavericks for the second time in a fortnight, fell to 1-19 overall and to 0-2 in conference play.
In doubles,
Kristen Kirby and
Emily Beckley took down Nia Matthews and Kali Hamilton by a 6-2 score in the top flight while
Georgia Hansen and
Maike Waldburger took down Sarah Megilligan and Emily Sproston, by a 6-0 count in the No. 2 match.
Taylor Hershey and
Rebecca Osterberg won the No. 3 match by default.
In singles, Kirby, Osterberg, Hansen, Waldburger and Hershey all won in straight sets. Senior
Kylie Simons also won by default in the No. 6 match.
At No. 1, Kirby, the reigning RMAC Player of the Week, won her fourth straight match by a 7-5, 6-1 margin over Matthews avenging a 3-set loss to her in Pueblo on Apr. 6.
Osterberg won 6-2, 6-2 over Hamilton at No. 2 as Beckley sat out of the singles lineup. Hansen was just as dominant at No. 3, posting a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sproston.
Waldburger won 6-4, 6-0 over Megilligan in the fourth fight while Hershey won over Katherine Ambrose at No. 5 without dropping a single game (6-0, 6-0).
