Kirby leads Mavericks to Friday split

CMU dominates CC, 9-0 after falling to No. 32 TSU

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University junior Kristen Kirby won all four of her matches on Friday as the Maverick women's tennis team dominated Colorado College 9-0 in the afternoon here at the Tigers' Burghardt Courts after falling 6-1 to NCAA Division II 32nd-ranked Tarleton State University earlier in the day at Pueblo City Park.

The Friday split moved the Mavericks to 6-15 on the year.  The TSU TexAnns later swept CSU-Pueblo, 7-0 and are now 10-5 on the year while the CC Tigers fell to 1-14 on the year.

Against the Tigers, the Mavericks won every match, winning every single game in six of them.

Kirby and No. 1 doubles partner Emily Beckley also recorded a 6-0 set win in their respective singles matches against the Tigers after they teamed for a 6-3 win over Alicia Barbaroux and Neetika Sud in the morning match against Tarleton State.

Kirby then outlasted Barbaroux, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the No. 1 singles match to record the Mavs' lone team point against TSU after the TexAnns had won two of the three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead.

The TexAnns then won four other singles matches in straight sets and got a win from Sud over Beckley in a match tie-breaker to complete the scoring.

Driving up I-25 for their later encounter, the Mavericks seized early momentum as the doubles tandems of Georgia Hansen and Maike Waldburger and Taylor Hershey and Kylie Simons both recorded 8-0 pro-set wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles against their Tiger opponents.  Beckley and Kirby then defeated Simone Hall and Annie Zlevor of CC in 8-2 pro-set match to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead as every match was counted towards the team score, per Division III rules.

Playing in her hometown, Simons then took advantage of a rare opportunity to be in the team lineup in singles as well as she recorded one of the Mavs' three 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at No. 6 singles over Carter Norfleet.

Hansen and Hershey also scored victories by those same margins at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively.

Meanwhile, Kirby scored a 6-0, 6-3 win over Tess Rubin at No. 1 singles to register her third straight singles victory and fifth total win over the last two days.  Beckley then delivered yet another team point CMU's way with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Annie Zlevor at No 2 singles before Rebecca Osterberg won 6-2, 6-2 over Hall at No. 3 singles.

Osterberg and Simons also paired for an 8-0 exhibition doubles match win over Norfleet and Emily Faulks.

The Mavericks have now completed the road portion of their 2018-19 schedule and will return home to the Elliott Tennis Center for their final four matches of the season, including two during the Apr. 26-27 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.  They will begin the stretch next Friday (Apr. 19) taking on CSU-Pueblo after defeating the ThunderWolves, 6-1 last Saturday (Apr. 6) in Pueblo.
