Hershey completes perfect 6-0 weekend as Mavs drop 4-3 decision

CMU comes up short against West Region's 10th ranked Warriors

ST. GEORGE, Utah— Colorado Mesa University senior Taylor Hershey completed a perfect 6-0 weekend with partnering with Rebecca Osterberg for a 6-4 No. 3 doubles win before claiming a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to highlight the day for the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team, which fell agonizingly short in a 4-3 decision to Stanislaus State to wrap up their weekend at the Trailblazer Invite, held here at the Dixie State Tennis Courts.

The Mavericks also received a 6-3 win from Kristen Kirby and Emily Beckley and No. 1 doubles to help win the doubles point and went 2-0 and 3-1 up after Hershey's victory and a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kayla Nguyen at No. 3 singles.

However, the Warriors, ranked 10th in the West Region, rallied for the final three team points, two of which came in three setters to improve to 3-0 on the weekend and the season.  The Mavericks fell to 3-5 overall and to 0-3 in the spring with their second 4-3 loss in as many days and their third 1-point setback of the campaign.

"That was a great tennis match with lots of momentum swings and amazing points.  Unfortunately we keep coming up short on most of the big points," Maverick coach Dan MacDonald said.

Kirby and Beckley took down Cassidy Ferrell and Maria Ochoa in the first completed doubles match before the Warriors matched with a No. 2 win by Megan Hagerty and Nguyen over Hansen and Maike Waldburger.

However, moments later Hershey and Osterberg claimed the fourth straight victory over Amila Gogalija and Taylor Galya to secure the doubles point.

Moving up the lineup to No. 4 singles for the first time this season, following an injury that forced MacDonald to shift his lineup, Hershey then easily won her match over Sylvana Talamantes before the Warriors got on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles from Hagerty over Carolena Campos.

However, Hansen won her first singles of the match to put the Mavs up 3-1 before Gogalija outlasted Osterberg in three sets.  Ferrell, ranked 49th nationally, then completed a No. 1 singles win over Kirby to tie the score before Galya claimed a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 thriller over Waldburger for the overall win.

The Mavericks will take next weekend off before hosting two matches in early March taking on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals MSU Denver on Mar. 1 and CSU-Pueblo on Mar. 2.  The match against MSU Denver will not count in the conference standings.
