Coach Dan MacDonald

Dan MacDonald

Dan MacDonald has been both the head men's and women's tennis coach at Colorado Mesa since 2006. He has been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year 12 times (seven women, five men), and was named the ITA Women's Coach of the Year in 2009.

Under MacDonald, the women's progam has won four RMAC regular season titles and three tournament titles. The women have made six trips to the NCAA tournament under MacDonald's watch, including back-to-back runs to the Sweet 16 in 2011 and 2012. The latter run to the Sweet 16 included an upset tournament win over then-No. 1 Augustana.

The men won the 2017 RMAC regular season title, the team's first since MacDonald was a player. MacDonald has led the men to the NCAA Tournament four times, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2010. After the RMAC discontinued tennis, both programs have been competing as part of the PacWest conference since 2021.

MacDonald has coached two RMAC Players of the Year (Teri Mayeda and Jordan Lyden) and three RMAC Academic Players of the Year (Teri Mayeda, Jordan Lyden and Jordan Chomko). Victoria Sargent, Kristin Kirby and Spencer Weinberg garnered RMAC Freshman of the Year honors, and Kaitlan Sera was the ITA South Central Rookie of the Year.

Four CMU players have earned the Arthur Ashe Award (Nick Provenza, Jaco Gerbands, Victoria Sargent and Renee Demianew).

Prior to Mesa, MacDonald coached at Grand Junction and Fruita Monument High Schools.

He played two seasons for the Mavericks after transferring from Cowley County Community College. He helped the Mavericks qualify for the 1991 NAIA National Championship and the 1992 Colorado Div. II Championships. In his first season at Cowley County Community College he helped the Tigers to the Junior College Div. II National Championship. The team finished third the following season. He was a two-time All-American in both singles and doubles at Cowley County.

MacDonald holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Colorado Mesa.Â
