GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's swimming team will close out the home and dual-meet portion of their 2018-19 schedule when they host Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Western Colorado University in a Friday dual meet at the El Pomar Natatorium.
Action will begin at 10 a.m. Exhibition men's events will also be contested by the Maverick men in a scrimmage format. The 1 and 3-meter diving events will also be held for both genders but will not be included in the team scores as the Mountaineers only have women's swimming and no divers.
Sixteen total events, including 14 swimming events, for each gender will be held and the complete schedule can be seen below.
Prior to the dual, the Mavericks will honor their seniors in a brief ceremony.
Live results will be available via the meet mobile app and can also be accessed on the Mavericks' website. A live video stream (natural sound only) will also be available.
The Maverick women, ranked 11
th nationally in the latest TYR/CSCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, are coming off a dominating 228 ½-86 ½ 2-day dual win over the Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Saturday in Golden. In the process, the Mavericks extended their multiple-year RMAC dual winning streak to 15, which dates back to Jan. 22, 2016. Six of those wins have come against the Mountaineers, including a 189-61 triumph earlier this season on Oct. 27 in Gunnison.
The Maverick women won 13 of the 14 events contested that day and were victorious in 14 of 17 in last weekend's dual with the Orediggers, including all four relays. They also broke five CSM Natatorium records over the weekend and were led by sophomore
Sierra Forbord, who as involved in all of them.
Named as the RMAC Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday, Forbord swept the sprint freestyle (50, 100 and 200) events while swimming on three of the Mavericks' winning relay teams, which all set new pool records.
Forbord had also helped the Mavs set the Paul Wright Natatorium record in the 200 medley relay in the last dual with the Mountaineers and set the pool record in the 100 free there as the freestyle lead-off leg of the Mavs' winning 400 medley relay team.
Forbord also won a head-to-head battle with Western all-American Randi Yarnell, the 2018 RMAC Swimmer of the Year, in the 100 free breaking Yarnell's pool record in the process before lowering it again to 53.05 in the relay.
Meanwhile, Yarnell holds the El Pomar Natatorium record in three of Friday's events, including the 100 free. She was victorious in all four of her events at the A3 Performance Invite, which the Mavericks hosted in December, and is the unquestioned leader of the Mountaineer squad.
Friday's dual will not be just about Forbord and Yarnell. In the earlier match-up with the Mountaineers, the Mavericks had three double-event winners in
Grace Payton,
Samantha White and
Danielle Jefferies.
Jefferies, one of just three Maverick women's seniors (
Celine Sargis,
Abby Smith) on what is still a young squad, also claimed three individual wins last week at Mines sweeping the butterfly events while taking the 200 IM and swimming on the record setting medley relay teams. Payton also swept the individual backstroke events last weekend swam that stroke on the medley relay teams as well.
Samantha White was the breaststroker on those relay teams and took second in both individual distances.
Kennedy Bright also tasted individual victory last week, taking the 100 breast win.
The Maverick men, who are ranked ninth nationally, have six seniors who will be honored on Friday in diver
Liam Acosta, and swimmers
Morgan Bean,
Eric Berg,
Landon Ellis,
Jake Gremaud and
Xander Rowe.
