GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team hosted their annual Maroon and White dual on Halloween night (Oct. 31) in Brownson Arena. The White team won more matches than Maroon (6-5) but all of Maroon's wins came for bonus points in a 24-22 win.
White picked up the first two wins of the dual after
Tyler Johnson and
Tim Romero each earned decision victories at 125 and 133.
Maroon went on a three-match streak to take a 13-6 lead after five matches.
Eduardo Penha and
Kyle Kintz each won by major decision while
Payton Tawater earned a technical fall win at 157 pounds.
Marc Farina stopped the streak with a 7-4 win over
Luke Au-Yeung edging the White team closer at 13-9.
Jason Buhr earned the lone pin of the night at 165 pounds. Buhr pinned
Aaron Trygstad just as the buzzer sounded to end the second period of action. The pin gave the Maroon team a 19-9 advantage.
White would win three of the final four duals including decision victories for
Seth Latham and
TJ Lodermeier. The lone bonus point victory for White came in
Tyler Johnson's second match of the evening.
Nolan Krone earned a major decision win over
Pat Romero, 18-2 for the Maroon team's final points.
Colorado Mesa will open the season up on Saturday at the Cowboy Open. The Mavericks will return home next week for a pair of duals. They will host Cloud County CC on Thursday at 6pm before a showdown with No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday at 6pm in Brownson Arena.
