INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team closed out the 2024-25 season on Saturday (Mar. 15) afternoon with the placement matches at the NCAA National Championship tournament. The Mavericks had three competitors on the day with all of them winning one match.
Owen Cline was the lone Maverick to reach the semifinals in this year's tournament and he did so at 157 pounds. Cline fell to Central Oklahoma's Gabe Johnson, the No. 2 seed at the weight, by pin in the first round which dropped him into the consolation rounds.
In the consolation semifinals, the Orting, Wash. native bounced back with a win over Caleb Meunier of Minnesota State 7-4 in a hard-fought bout. In his next match, he medically forfeited to Adams State's Aaden Valdez and settled for fourth place.
At 125 pounds,
Dayson Torgerson finished in seventh place after going 1-1 on the day. He fell to Pitt Johnstown's Trevon Gray by major decision 16-7 but came back in the seventh-place match with an 8-0 major decision over Colton Drousias of Glenville State.
Like his teammate,
Tyler Doyle went 1-1 on the day to finish in seventh place at 285 pounds. Doyle fell to No. 4 seed Dorian Crosby of Gannon 10-4 to drop into the seventh-place match. He bounced back in a big way with a 4-1 win in sudden victory over No. 3 seed Carter Blough of Grand Valley State.
All three earned All-American honors and will return to the program next season.
The Mavs finished in a tie for 17th place in the team standings with 30 team points. That finish in the highest for any Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squad.
