Box Score SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa University softball team advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional Championship after splitting a pair of games Friday (May 12).
Colorado Mesa fell to No. 1 Angelo State 3-2 and defeated Lubbock Christian 3-2.
McKenzie Surface (27-5) took the lost despite striking out eight batters and only giving up three runs.
The Mavericks got an early lead in game one when
Zoe Pakes hit a double to center field that scored
Kaila Jacobi who reached on a walk.
The Mavericks second run of the game came in the sixth inning on a double by
Kaila Jacobi that scored
AnnMarie Torres who reached on an error.
Angelo State put two runners on base, both hit singles, before Kenedy Urbany hit a three-run homer to right field to give the Rambelles the lead.
The Mavericks and Chaps both struggled offensively through the first three innings of game two.
Sydney Beuthien hit a solo homerun to left field in the bottom of the fourth to give LCU a 1-0 lead.
Bailey Kleespies tied it up at 1-1 with a solo homerun down the left line in the top of the fifth.
The Chaps took a 2-1 lead in the sixth thanks to a double and a single.
The Mavericks plated two runs in dramatic fashion in the top of the seventh. The Mavericks loaded the bases with a double, a fielder's choice and an error. Bailey Boren hit a single to center field that scored
Bailey Kleespies.
Kellie Mrofcza was thrown out at home on the relay, but the catcher over threw the ball to third trying to get
Hailey Hinson out. Hinson would run home and appeared to be out at the plate, but was ruled safe due to catcher's interference.
AnnMarie Torres recorded two of the Maverick's five hits in the game.
Kimbri Herring earned the win allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six.
Colorado Mesa (48-7) will need to defeat Angelo State (54-5) twice Saturday (May 12) to advance to next week's Super Regional.
