Mavs to cap regular season at home looking to lock up RMAC Tournament spot

CMU hosts Fort Lewis on Friday, CSU Pueblo for Sunday's Senior Day

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team will wrap up the regular season at home and will try to lock up a spot in next week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Mavericks, 4-11 overall and 3-5 in RMAC play, currently sit in fourth place in the conference standings and will host the two teams below them, starting Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock against winless Fort Lewis College (0-10, 0-8 RMAC).

The Mavericks will then take on fifth place CSU Pueblo (5-9, 2-6 RMAC) on Sunday at Noon in a game that could be a de facto RMAC Tournament play-in game depending on Friday's results.

Following Sunday's game, the Mavericks will recognize ten players during Senior Day festivities.

Tickets for both games can be purchased here.

Both games can also be seen with a subscription to the RMAC Network (more information below).

Live statistics will also be accessible here.

Last Times Out

The Mavericks were on the road last weekend and dropped a heart-breaking 8-7 decision at UCCS last Friday (Apr. 17) before falling 14-8 to No. 19 ranked and conference-leading Regis last Sunday (Apr. 19).

Against UCCS, the Mavericks held an 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter but failed to score in the final 15 minutes as UCCS tied the game early in the fourth before winning it with a goal with just ten seconds remaining.

On Sunday at Regis, Carson Dickey recorded her second hat trick of the weekend while Heather Hawkins made a career-high 16 saves (originally 17 but changed in revised official statistics earlier this week) in a valiant effort against the Rangers.

Century Watch

With six goals last week, Maverick senior attack Carson Dickey has reached the precipice  of the 100 career goal milestone.  The Murrieta, California native will enter her final regular season weekend with 99 goals, tied with Allie Henderson for sixth most in program history.

Only five other Mavericks in the program's history, including current teammate Justine Anderson, have ever reached the century mark.  Anderson, who has missed this entire season due to injury, was the latest to reach the milestone and did it against Fort Lewis at home last season, a feat Dickey could easily do this year.  Anderson currently has 120 career goals.

Record Watch

Playing her best lacrosse of the season over recent weeks, Maverick sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hawkins could set a new program record for saves in a season this weekend.

Hawkins, who made a career-high 16 stops against Regis, has racked up 53 saves in the last four games alone and will enter this weekend with 138, which is already the second highest single-season total in program history and just 18 shy of the record.

Lauren Wells set the program record of 156 in the Mavs' first ever season in 2011 and then added 137 in year No. 2 of the program in 2012.

Hawkins, who made 122 saves en route to RMAC Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year honors last season, is already fifth in program history with 260 career saves.

Wells also holds the career record of 455.

Playoff Scenarios

The Mavericks, 3-5 in conference play and in fourth place in the conference standings, will enter the weekend with a Magic Number of two, to clinch a spot in next week's 4-team RMAC Tournament.  With two wins, two CSU Pueblo losses or a combination of one of each, the Mavs would qualify for the RMAC Tournament for the 12th time in as many years of the event's history.

The Mavs could still secure the No. 3 seed if they were to win both of their games this weekend combined with two Westminster losses but would otherwise be the No. 4 seed.  Westminster is 5-3 in conference play and will host CSU Pueblo on Friday and Fort Lewis on Sunday.

The Mavs could clinch a spot as soon as Friday with a victory over Fort Lewis combined with a Westminster win/CSU Pueblo later that evening.

If that does not happen, Sunday's game will determine the final spot in the tournament field.

At the top of the standings, Regis has clinched at least a share of the RMAC Regular Season title with 8-1 record, one game better than UCCS' 7-2 record.  Those teams will play each other Saturday in Denver.  UCCS could snag  a share of the title with a win and would need to beat Regis by six goals to claim the No. 1 seed and hosting rights for the tournament after Regis won the first meeting between the teams by a 13-8, 5-goal margin.

Coach's Corner

Ashley Delaney is in her third year as the Mavs' head coach and her seventh on the CMU staff after serving as an assistant for the four previous seasons from 2020-23.

The Mavs have gone 11-6 in both of Delaney's previous years as a head coach and posted a 33-19 combined record in her four years as an assistant under two previous head coaches.

She was named as the RMAC Coach of the Year in 2025 after leading the Mavs to a share of the RMAC Regular Season Championship and to hosting rights of the RMAC Tournament for the first time in program history.

She also helped the Mavs win a share of the RMAC crown in 2023 when she was an assistant coach.  The Mavericks are a combined 59-40 with her on the coaching staff and have played in all five RMAC Tournament Championship games with her on the staff.

Counting this year, Delaney now has a 26-23 record as the Mavs' head coach.

She and the Mavericks are 5-0 against both Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo in her tenure as the head coach.  They are 11-0 against Fort Lewis in her time on the Maverick sideline and 10-0 against CSU Pueblo including her years as an assistant coach.

Know Your Foes

Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis is 0-10 overall and 0-8 in RMAC play entering the final weekend of the campaign.  They are already eliminated from RMAC Tournament contention but will look to spoil the Mavs' hopes while trying to avoid their first winless season since starting their program in 2009, when they went 0-8.

They have been outscored 168-52 this season.

Diamond Velasco leads the team with 19 goals and 21 offensive points while Jasmine Nguyen, Piper Price and Marissa LaCivita had combined for 16 more goals.  Price also leads the team with nine assists and is second behind Velasco with 14 total points.

Nguyen has 21 draw controls to her credit this season while Samantha Rodgers leads the defensive with 41 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls.  Rodgers leads the RMAC in caused turnovers per game (4.10) and is second in the raw total.  She is also second in the conference for ground balls per game (3.40).

Sydney Tannaci is second on the team in both defensive categories with 16 caused turnovers and 32 ground balls.

Olivia Tilbury has been the Skyhawks' only netminder this season and has recorded 107 saves, a .389 save percentage and 16.80 goals against average throughout the campaign.

CSU Pueblo

The ThunderWolves will enter the weekend with a 5-9 overall record, including a 2-6 conference record.  They play at Westminster on Friday night before facing the Mavs.

They snapped a 6-game slide with an 18- home win over Fort Lewis on Sunday.

Emily Doane leads the Pack with 35 goals and 51 offensive points, the third highest point total in the conference.  She is sixth in goal scoring.  Ainsley Jackson, who has 27 goals, and Sydney Gunnels, who has 25, have also been prolific goal scorers.

Dylan Retzloff leads the defense with 28 caused turnovers while Maelynn Saucedo has contributed 27 while racking up 36 ground balls.

Breonna Mason has played more than two thirds of the Pack's 840 minutes in net, recording a 3-7 record, 79 saves, a .371 save percentage and 14.12 goals against average.  Hannah Duffee has a .369 save percentage and 11.75 goals against average in seven games and four starts.

Series Histories

The Mavs have won the last 16 games against Fort Lewis since 2016, including a 15-2 decision on Mar. 29 in Durango.

They Mavs lead the all-time series 16-11 after the Skyhawks won the first 11 meetings between 2011-15 after having a more established program than CMU.

The Mavs are a perfect 20-0 against CSU Pueblo, including this year's Mar. 27 win over the ThunderWolves in Pueblo.  The Mavs are 10-0 all-time against Pack in Grand Junction.
