DENVER— Carson Dickey scored three goals while
Heather Hawkins made a career-high 17 saves to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team's efforts in a 14-8 road defeat to nationally-ranked Regis University,
The Rangers, led by five goals from Aubrey Benton, won for the ninth straight time, and improved to 12-4 while clinching a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title with an 8-1 conference record.
The Mavs are now 4-11 overall and 3-5 in RMAC play.
The Mavs got out to a 3-1 lead at the half-way point of the first quarter before the Rangers went on a 5-0 run over the next 15 minutes before building a 9-5 halftime lead.
The Rangers then scored three straight and four of the six third-quarter goals before a defensive fourth quarter that saw each team score just once.
Dickey, who scored six goals on the road trip to UCCS and Regis, scored three of the Mavs' last four goals while
Ella Freemon finished Sunday's game with two goals.
Avery Irlbeck,
Kaylee Kittle and
Devon Morris also scored.
The Rangers finished the game with a 37-21 edge in total shots and racked up 20 ground balls, eight more than the Mavs.
However, Hawkins did her part, making six saves in the first quarter and ten in the first half. She then added three in the third quarter and four more saves in the last.
Meanwhile, defenders
Sadie Chappuis and
Monroe McClimans both had three ground balls. Chappuis also registered two caused turnovers.
Dickey has now recorded five hat tricks this season and leads the Mavs with 28 goals. She also now stands with 99 career goals entering the Mavs' final two regular season games that the Mavs will play at home next weekend.
They will host Fort Lewis College on Friday (Apr. 17) at 4 p.m. before taking on CSU Pueblo in their Senior Day game next Sunday (Apr. 19) at Noon.
