GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team scored nine straight goals after taking an early 7-1 lead and received goals from ten different players in a dominant 18-6 win over visiting Fort Lewis College on Friday here at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Maverick senior
Carson Dickey also registered her 100
th career goal while
Olivia Turk surpassed the 100-career ground ball milestone.
That result, which improved CMU's record to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, combined with Westminster University's win over CSU Pueblo later in the evening in Salt Lake City, Utah, allowed the Mavs to clinch a spot in next week's RMAC Tournament with a game to spare.
Sadie Chappuis, who played in a midfield role, scored a career-high four goals to lead the Maverick attack, which matched a season-high for goals. Fellow sophomore
Maeve Miller also recorded her first career hat trick in what was her first start of her career.
Avery Irlbeck,
Courteney Murray and
Ella Freemon were also able to record two goals while freshman
Sophia Farr was able to score her first collegiate goal.
Defensively,
Heather Hawkins made four saves while recording three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Chappuis also had two caused turnovers, three ground balls and a pair of draw controls.
Irlbeck had four draw controls as the Mavs doubled up the Skyhawks, 18-9 in that category.
Tessa Pearson also registered three caused turnovers for the Mavs, who were able to play their reserves significantly.
Turk added three ground balls and now has 101 in her career.
CMU jumped out to a 7-1 lead as seven different players scored in the first 17 ½ minutes, including Dickey who scored her milestone goal with 2:59 left in the first quarter on a
Kenzie Streby assist. Dickey, who hails from Murrietta, California, is just the sixth Maverick player to reach the milestone, last done by teammate
Justine Anderson in the Mavs' 2025 home game against the Skyhawks.
However, the Skyhawks closed the Mavs' lead to 7-4 with three goals in a span of just 2:07.
Miller then recorded her second goal of the game and fourth of the season with 2:57 left in the half before the Skyhawks cut the gap back to just three (8-5) just 24 seconds later.
Chappuis then scored a late second quarter goal before adding the first and last of six in dominant third quarter as the Mavs implemented the running clock for the final 17-plus minutes.
The Mavs finished Friday's game with a 44-15 advantage in shots. They also put 30 shots on net as the Skyhawks' goalie Olivia Tilbury was under pressure throughout the game. The Skyhawk net-minder did finish with 12 saves in a complete game effort.
The Mavericks will close out the regular season on Sunday at Noon when they take on CSU Pueblo, which fell 14-8 at Westminster. That loss dropped the ThunderWolves to 5-10 overall and to 2-7 in RMAC play and ended the Pack's chances at a RMAC Tournament spot.
Following Sunday's game, the Mavericks will recognize ten of their players, during Senior Day festivities.
