Mavs sputter in fourth quarter, fall 8-7 at UCCS

Dickey records hat trick

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The UCCS Mountain Lions held the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks without a goal in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winner with just ten seconds remaining to claim an 8-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's lacrosse victory on Friday afternoon here at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The Mountain Lions, who had won by the same scoreline last month in Grand Junction, improved to 8-5 overall and to 6-2 in conference play with their seventh win in their last eight outings.

The Mavericks, who had won three of their last four, received a hat trick from senior Carson Dickey but fell to 4-10 overall and to 3-4 in conference play.

UCCS's season sweep were their first two wins in the rivalry, that CMU still leads 15-2.

Dickey, who now has a team-leading 25 goals on the season to match her uniform number, had given the Mavericks a 7-6 lead at the end of the third quarter with her third goal of the game.

However, the Mountain Lions equalized with 10:49 left and pressured the Mavericks throughout the fourth quarter as Josie Leonard netted the game-winner on a pass from RMAC assists leader Allie Schell.

Maverick sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hawkins, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week made eight of her season-high 14 saves in the fourth quarter to keep the Mavs in the game.  However, they were guilty of five fourth-quarter turnovers and took three green cards and a yellow card in the final 9:21, helping the Mountain Lions continue the pressure.

The Mountain Lions outs-hot the Mavs 13-2 in the fourth quarter and 36-19 overall.

The Mavs had a 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first quarter on goals from Dickey and Sadie Chappuis before the Mountain Lions scored the first three goals of the second quarter to build a 4-2 lead, the fist of just two 2-goal leads for either team throughout the game.

Maverick freshman Lilly Osterman then scored a pair of unassisted goals to tie the game with 5:23 left in the second quarter before the Mountain Lions' Ella Mills scored the third of her three goals to put the hosts in front 5-4 at the half.

Charlotte Fannin and CMU's Devon Morris, who has now scored 16 goals in the last five games, then exchanged goals in the opening minute of the third quarter before Dickey scored a woman-up goal on an assist from Sofia Chock to tie the game at six with 6:05 left in the quarter.

Dickey then put the Mavs ahead for the first time in nearly three quarters right before the third-quarter buzzer.

The Mavericks will complete their final road trip of the regular season on Sunday when they take on the nation's 19th-ranked Regis University Rangers in Denver.  The Rangers (11-4, 7-1 RMAC) have won eighth straight games and lead the RMAC by a game over UCCS after claiming a 16-5 home win over Westminster, which came in to the day in second place, on Friday night.
