Maverick Hoop squads both included in initial NCAA Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's basketball teams are both in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings, released by the NCAA on Wednesday in alphabetical order.

Those rankings will be updated each Wednesday throughout the end of the season in advance of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament selection shows on Sunday, Mar. 8.

The Mavs are the only institution in the RMAC to have both teams represented.

In future weeks, the rankings will be released in numerical order giving an early predication at the eight teams who will eventually be selected from the region to play in the regional portion of the NCAA Tournament.

The tournament champions of the Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences will earn automatic berths while the other six spots will be selected at-large through the regional ranking process.  The No. 1 through 8 seeding and hosting rights will also be based on those rankings.

The Maverick women are currently 27-1 overall and have won 24 consecutive games.  They hold a perfect 17-0 record in RMAC play and clinched a share of the conference's regular season title as well as the No. 1 seed for next month's RMAC Tournament with their 90-47 win over Westminster on Tuesday night.  They have three regular season games remaining, including their Senior Day game, the last home contest of the regular season on Saturday against Western Colorado at 1 p.m.

The Mountaineers are also in the list of ten teams in the rankings.  Adams State and UCCS also represent the RMAC while six Lone Star teams are ranked, including Texas Woman's, West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian who are also ranked alongside CMU in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll, which has no bearing on the regional rankings.  Texas Woman's is second while the Mavs continue to hold down the No. 4 spot, their highest ranking since 2013-14.  West Texas A&M is now ranked 11th in the national poll, down three spots from a week ago, while Lubbock Christian is still 23rd.

The Maverick men now have a 17-8 overall record and are one of three RMAC teams in the top 10 of Wednesday's regional rankings.  Black Hills State and Fort Lewis are the others.  The LSC has the other seven teams.

CMU's loss at Westminster on Tuesday night, which ended a 7-game winning streak, is not yet figured into the regional rankings, which have a Sunday night cutoff each week.

The Maverick men, who are 10-1 at home this season, will also play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday as well, facing Western Colorado at 3 p.m.  Before the game, the Mavs will recognize their lone senior in Ty Allred, who surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone in Tuesday night's game, played in his home state of Utah.
