GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University women's basketball standout
Olivia Reed Thyne was tabbed as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The honor is the highest academic honor that the conference bestows each academic year and makes Reed Thyne the second female (Lauren White; 2023-24) and third overall Maverick (Justin Thompson; 2021-22) athlete to ever receive the accolade, first given in 2016-17.
She is also the first women's basketball player in RMAC history to ever earn the honor.
Only one male and one female are selected each year from amongst the 22 conference-sponsored sports and will be recognized during the RMAC Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on July 9 in Colorado Springs.
The Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner will be announced on Wednesday.
The Windsor, Colorado native, graduated with a 3.93 GPA this spring while majoring in kinesiology after leading the Maverick women's basketball team to a 37-2 overall record, a trip to the NCAA Tournament semifinals and a double RMAC regular season and tournament championships.
In the process, she broke a 35-year old RMAC scoring record by scoring 894 points while breaking a 40-year old RMAC rebounding record with 457 caroms.
Reed Thyne was named as both the RMAC Player of the Year and RMAC Academic Player of the Year for the third straight season and won consensus first team all-America accolades. She was also the D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year and the RMAC and NCAA South Central Region Tournament MVP while earning a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team.
She was also tabbed to the College Sports Communicators NCAA Division II Academic All-America teams for the third straight year and was named as the Team Member of the Year this season amongst many other honors while leading the Mavericks to a 34-game winning streak and perfect 20-0 RMAC record.
In addition to her single-season records, Reed Thyne also smashed the RMAC career records for both points (2,490) and rebounds (1,431) this season while becoming the only player in conference history to ever score more than 2,000 points and grab over 1,000 rebounds.
She was a 4-time First Team All-RMAC player and 4-time all-region selection in her career and was named as the 2022-23 RMAC Freshman of the Year.
She led the Mavericks to three consecutive RMAC titles and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances as well.
