Maverick men complete Colorado sweep with dual win over Air Force

Hansson, Moore, Samsonov win events in Saturday portion of weekend double-dual at BYU

PROVO, Utah—  Micah Moore and Luka Samsonov won events as the Colorado Mesa University men's swimming and diving team proved to be the best in the Colorado as the Mavericks held off Air Force for a 183-170 win as part of a 2-day double dual here at BYU's Richards Building Pool on Saturday.

The Mavericks have now defeated the Air Force, Denver and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Colorado School of Mines in duals this season while also getting past Mines and Adams State in invitationals earlier this season.

They have now defeated six NCAA Division I opponents this year.

CMU's women, who have beat four Division I opponents in invitationals this year, also received an event win from Olivia Hansson in the 1,650-yard freestyle, her second of the weekend, but fell to Air Force, 208-146, and to the host BYU Cougars, 240-113.

CMU's men also came up short against BYU, 225-129.

Moore claimed the 200-yard butterfly in 1:48.30 while Samsonov won the 200 back in 1:47.71.  Samsonov also helped the Mavs' take second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:13.11.

Elsewhere, Guillaume Guth took second in both the 50 (20.02) and 200 free (1:37.55) in between his part of the Mavs' second place finishes in both the 400 medley and 200 free relays.

He anchored the 400 medley relay team with Samsonov, Aron Jonsson, Oskar Sawicki before opening up the 200 free relay with a 19.92-second split as Sawicki, Richard Schmiedefeld and Holden Convertino combined for a time of 1:19.98.

Ben Vester also turned in an improved NCAA Division II Championship "B" qualifying time of 1:50.29 (1:49.09-altitude-adjusted) to take third in the 200 individual medley.

In other events, Gavyn Tatge touched fifth in the 1,650 free in 16:17.84 while Jonsson finished sixth in the 100 breast with a time of 55.10.

Ryan Campbell led the Maverick divers taking fourth in the 3-meter event with 313.25 points over six dives.

Hansson, who had won the 500 free in the Friday evening session, dominated the 1650 on Saturday, posting a more than 10-second win in 17:05.29.

The Mavs also picked up a second place finish from Taylar Hooton, Antonia Leese, Kiara Borchardt and Ada Qunell in the 400 medley relay at the start of the season.

Later, Abby Uhl took third in the 200 back while Leese did the same in the 100 breast.  Uhl touched in 2:01.70 while Leese finished in 1:03.22 with teammate Melina Giraudeau finishing just behind in an improved NCAA "B" cut time of 1:03.74 (1:03.64-converted) to move up a spot to sixth in CMU history.

The 200 free relay team of Qunell, Hooton, Borchardt and Reagan Horn also finished third with a time of 1:33.80.

The Mavs' also picked up fourth place finishes from Qunell in the 200 free (1:51.20) and Tori Bartusiak in the 200 fly (2:05.45).

Horn also led the Mavs in the 50 free, taking sixth in 23.73 seconds after Giraudeau led the Mavs in the 200 IM with a sixth-place time of 2:07.25.

Jenna Hurley led the Maverick women's divers, taking eight on the 1-meter board with 232.20 points.

The Maverick divers will be in action again next week, competing in Northern Arizona's Lumberjack Invitational while the CMU swimmers will rest until hosting the RMAC Championships, starting on Feb. 10.
