PROVO, Utah— Guillaume Guth set a Richards Building Pool record time of 43.43 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle as he,
Melina Giraudeau,
Oskar Sawicki and
Olivia Hansson all won events to lead the Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams on Friday evening in the first of two days in a weekend double dual against host BYU and Air Force.
The Maverick men, who also picked up second place finishes from
Ben Vester,
Luka Samsonov and
Ryan Campbell, are leading Air Force 94-73 through nine events. BYU holds a 109-58 advantage over the Mavs and an even wider 120-47 cushion over the Falcons.
The CMU women also received second place finishes from the 200 medley relay team,
Kiara Borchardt and
Taylar Hooton, and are within 14 points of Air Force (90 ½-76 ½) heading into Saturday's 11 a.m. session. BYU leads the CMU women, 110-57 and is up 105-62 on Air Force.
Guth's time broke the former pool record of 43.74, set in 2024, and gave him more than a half-second win over a trio of Cougars.
Meanwhile, Sawicki took the 100 fly in 46.95 seconds, winning by a huge 1.37-second margin over BYU's Joshua Reed.
On the women's side, Giraudeau moved up three spots to second in Maverick history with an improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 2:15.09 (2:13.89-altitude adjusted) in the 200 breast, winning by just six hundredths of a second. Giraudeau will also rank as high as fourth on the national list with her altitude-adjusted time.
Hansson was a little more dominant, claiming the 500 free in 4:54.90 (4:49.90-converted) to win by nearly two seconds. That time was five one hundredths better than her former season-best and just 1.45 seconds off her own school record. She continues to sit second nationally in that event.
After the Mav men's quartet of
Richard Schmiedefeld,
Aron Jonsson, Sawicki and
Holden Convertino took third in the 200 medley relay (1:28.76), Vester turned in the Mavs' first second place finish in the 400 IM, finishing in 3:59.04 to defeat Air Force's top swimmer by 0.22 seconds.
Samsonov then turned in a solid time of 48.88 in the 100 Back breaking up what would have been a 1-6 BYU sweep.
In diving, which was contested concurrently, Campbell took second on the 1-meter board with a score of 311.00 points. Teammate and reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Diver of the Week
David Roethlisberger was fourth with 302.85 points.
Elsewhere,
Micah Moore finished fourth in the 400 IM in 4:00.41 while Jonsson led CMU with a fourth place time of 2:00.83 in the 200 breaststroke.
Jonas Friess led CMU's men in the 500 free, taking fifth in 4:37.77. He also teamed with
Braden Felio,
Jacob Sampson and Samsonov to claim a fourth place finish in the 400 free relay as the Mav "B" squad turned in a time of 3:04.65. The "A" team was disqualified.
Earlier, the women's 200 medley relay team of Hooton,
Antonia Leese,
Kiara Borchardt and
Reagan Horn had opened the meet, tying Air Force in the 200 medley relay for second place with a time of 1:41.58.
Hansson then set another career-best and NCAA "B" qualifying time of 4:30.52 (4:25.52-converted) in the 400 IM to place fourth. She also took over the No. 10 spot in CMU history.
Ada Qunell then took third in the 100 free with a time of 50.25 seconds before Hooton claimed her second place finish in the 100 back, touching in 55.28 seconds.
Borchardt then matched Hooton in the 100 fly with a time of 55.23 seconds, which preceded Hansson's 500 free win.
Qunell, Hooton,
Kendyll Wilkinson and
Hanna Sasivarevic then finished the session with a fourth place time of 3:25.31 in the 400 free relay.
