Hultman wins "A" title, Mavs fare well before weather cancelation

Mav tennis squads rack up 14 match wins on Sunday morning

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's tennis teams enjoyed a strong day and combined for 14 match wins and while Emil Hultman won the men's singles "A" draw before lightning interfered and thwarted the rest of the Colorado College Invitational here at Monument Valley Park.

Hultman claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) semifinal victory over Western New Mexico University's Yannik Rogulski and then beat the Mustangs' David Guta, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in the final.  Guta had defeated CMU's Romain Payan in the other semifinal, the only completed match that CMU lost throughout the day.

Elsewhere, Diogo Manzano won a pair of "A" singles consolation matches while Henry Scheck claimed another consolation victory.

In the men's "B" draw, Maverick newcomer Gavin Hutter defeated Colorado College's Hudson Chris, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals, which was completed before the inclement weather.  Luke Burriesci also won a consolation match.

In doubles, Shcek and William Leschig won their semifinal, 6-2 but were not able to complete the final.

The Maverick women were led by Devyn Rodriguez, who advanced to the "A" singles final with a win over CC's Avery Hickman.  The Maverick junior was also winning her final match before it was called off due to the weather.
In the "B" singles draw, Sophie Hartman and Taylor Nokes both won their semifinal matches but were unable to play each other in the finale.

Catalina Ballon also won a pair of consolation matches in the "A" draw while Hartman and Gonzalez advanced to the doubles final with a 6-1 semifinal win over the WNMU pair of Lucia Carmena/Eva Guta.

The Maverick men will next play at the Washburn Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Topeka, Kansas.

Meanwhile, CMU's women will play in the Pueblo Duals, taking on CSU Pueblo, Fort Hays State and CC in their lone team action of the fall campaign.
