AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University sprinters
Marik Cummings and
Gaby Horton both advanced through the rounds and into the finals of the 100-meter dash to highlight the Mavericks' performances on Friday at the Franson Last Chance track & field meet here at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.
Two Maverick throwers also won their events at nearby Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
Cummings posted a wind-aided and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 10.41 seconds in the semifinal round after posting a solid mark of 10.49 in the preliminary heats. His semifinal time, which qualified him fifth for Saturday's final, is just quicker than teammate
Teo Casados' official school record of 10.43 and just off the Mavs' all-conditions program best of 10.37, set by Eliah Williams last year.
Casados and Amaria Mora also reached the semifinals. Casados finished 11
th in 10.49 seconds while Mora turned in a wind-aided time of 10.71 seconds to place 16th in the semifinals.
Quentin Hartel just missed out on the semifinal, taking 25
th in the preliminary heats with a wind-aided time of 10.80 seconds.
Elsewhere,
Antone Higgs placed fourth overall as the top collegiate finisher in the long jump with solid mark of 7.40 meters (24-3.5) in a tune-up for the national meet, which he is a shoe-in to qualify for.
Aidan Brownell also competed for the Maverick men, taking 16
th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.96 seconds.
On the women's side, Horton finished seventh in the 100-meter semifinals with a time of 11.55 seconds. She had run to a mark of 11.60 seconds in the preliminaries.
Serenity Burnett-Perry also qualified for the semifinals, placing 18
th in 12.14 seconds after running to a time of 12.16 in the preliminary round.
Hannah Schissler took 26
th in the preliminaries in 12.18 seconds and move into the No. 9 spot of program history.
Athalia Mills competed in two events throughout the day, placing ninth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.76 seconds while turning in a long jump mark of 4.91 meters (16-1.5), good for 28
th place.
Autumn McQuitty also moved into the No. 6 spot of program history in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:46.89 to take 15
th place.
Meanwhile,
Brooke Miller was 16
th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.96.
In the heptathlon,
Kaitlyn Pearson finished tenth with 4,374 points.
In the throw events,
Augustine Hancock won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 52.35 meters (171-9) while
Izaak Siefken won the men's javelin throw with a toss of 64.11 meters (210-4).
Seth Sherwood also competed in the javelin, finishing seventh in his flight and eighth overall with a toss of 54.95 meters (180-3).
