Five Mavs pick up USILA All-South Region honors

Kirschke leads Mav contingent as Second Team SSDM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Short stick defensive midfielder Deuce Kirschke led a group of five Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's lacrosse players who were named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's series of NCAA Division II All-South Region teams that were announced by the coaching organization on Tuesday.

Kirschke was a second team selection at his position while JJ Brummett picked up third team honors at attack.  Defender Caden Hathaway, midfielder Dillon Pless and goalie Shaden Shields all picked up honorable mention recognition.

The group helped lead the Mavericks to a 13-4 record and the program's second ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.  The Mavs also swept the Rocky Mountain Division regular season and tournament titles and went on to win the Peach Belt Conference Tournament title to receive the NCAA tournament bid.

Kirschke, a native of Lone Tree, Colorado, was a First Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pick for the second straight year at his position and helped the Mavs lead the division in both scoring offense and defense.  He finished the year with 13 goals, 18 points, 24 groundballs and nine caused turnovers and put all 18 of his shots on net.  He recorded his first two career hat tricks in the Rocky Mountain Division tournament.

Brummett, a senior from Glen Rock, Pennsylvania led the division with 58 points and co-led the division alongside teammate Connor Jensen with 36 goals.  He was named to First Team All-RMAC squad for the fourth time this season and finished his career with 134 goals, the third most in Maverick history, and 174 offensive points, fifth most in program history.  He was also a USILA Honorable Mention All-South Region pick last year and was recently named as a USA Lacrosse Magazine Honorable Mention All-American for the second straight year.

Hathaway, a senior from Dallas, Texas, earned his second career first team and third overall all-conference honor this season and finished the 2025 season campaign with 19 caused turnovers, the second most in the Rocky Mountain Division.  He also had 47 groundballs, the second most for defenders, and finished his career ranked amongst the top 10 Mavericks in program history with 138 groundballs and 55 caused turnovers.

Pless, a junior from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, earned his second straight First Team All-RMAC nod in 2025 and was a key 2-way player for the Mavericks.  He scored in 15 of the Mavs' 17 games and racked up 24 goals and 35 points while registering three or more points in seven separate games.  He also had 13 groundballs and eight caused turnovers defensively.

Sheilds, a sophomore from Naples, Florida, smashed the CMU single-season record for saves, making 178.  He led the Rocky Mountain Division and ranks tenth nationally with his .587 save percentage.  He was a Second Team All-Rocky Mountain Division pick and went on to be named as the Peach Belt Conference Tournament MVP after making 48 saves in the Mavs' three victories.
