ALAMOSA, Colo.— Four normal reserves recorded hat-tricks while
Cam Casados won 25 of 29 face-off draws while scooping up 10 ground balls as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks clinched at least a share of the Peach Belt Conference Rocky Mountain Division title with a comprehensive 21-6 road win over Adams State University on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite resting a handful of their top players, the Mavericks dominated the possession and claimed their fifth straight win to improve to 9-2 overall and to 6-0 in the division.
The Grizzlies fell to 0-7 with Wednesday's defeat.
The Mavs had also dominated the Grizzlies, 22-5 in a home game just six days earlier.
Freshman
Charlie Droitsch led a list of 12 different Maverick goal scorers, netting four goals while assisting on another. The effort was the first hat trick of the freshman's collegiate career and tripled his goal scoring total from two to six.
Jack Cooper, who had five goals and seven points in last week's win over ASU, added three more goals and three assists on ten shots while sophomore
Eli Bibler recorded his first career hat trick with three goals while adding two helpers.
Erich Petersen also scored three goals to register his second hat trick while
Connor Coulson and
Marco Lagos were amongst the other Maverick goal scorers, adding their names to the 2025 goal-scoring list. Coulson and Lagos are freshman who were playing in just their second career games, making appearances against the Grizzlies twice.
The Mavericks finished with a 56-22 advantage in shots and had a lion's share of the possession, recording 33 groundballs as Casados dominated his battles with ASU's Anthony Fillerup and Matthew Knight.
Luke Parrish got the start in goal and played the first three quarters while freshman
Grant Brooker saw time in the fourth. They were credited with a combined four saves.
The Mavs rested normal starter
Shaden Shields as well as their top three goal scorers in
JJ Brummett,
Connor Jensen and
Logan Smith as well as their top defenders in
Caden Hathaway and
Brady Porter. Reigning Rocky Mountain Division Defensive Player of the Week
Mike Edwards, CMU's normal No. 1 face-off specialist, also got the day off, giving way to Casados, who recorded the fourth highest single-game total for faceoff wins in program history.
Julius Petersen scored the game's first goal just 93 seconds in before ASU evented the score at one, just 20 seconds later on an Alex Wilderboer marker.
Cooper,
Erich Petersen and Droitsch then gave CMU a 4-1 lead through the opening quarter.
The Mavs then dominated the remaining quarters, scoring five goals in the second and fourth quarters and seven times in the third, extending their lead throughout the contest.
The Mavs are now 13-0 all-time in Alamosa and are 34-0 all-time against the Grizzlies, since both teams founded their programs in 2011.
The Mavs have scored 20 or more goals in ten of the last 12 meetings with the Grizzlies, who will conclude their season next Thursday (Apr. 17) against Westminster.
CMU will return home to face Dominican University of California (2-7, 2-4 RMD) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and will recognize the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship team at halftime.
A win in that game would give CMU and outright division title and seal up post-season tournament hosting rights. CMU could also clinch the right to host the Apr. 24 and 26 tournament if CUI defeats Westminster on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
