GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks ran an efficient offensive attack and clinched the outright Peach Belt Conference Rocky Mountain Division regular season title with a 22-10 home win over the visiting Dominican University of California Penguins on Saturday afternoon here at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Eli Bibler matched a Maverick single-game record with six assists while
JJ Brummett and
Jack Cooper scored four times each in the victory, CMU's sixth straight overall and 19
th straight at home over the past four seasons.
The Mavs, who are now guaranteed of hosting the Rocky Mountain Division tournament as the No. 1 seed on Apr. 24 and 26, are now 10-2 overall and improved to 7-0 in divisional contests.
The Mavs have now won at least a share of the last five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference or divisional regular season titles and have dropped just two regular season conference games and one conference tournament game in that stretch.
The Penguins fell to 2-8 overall and to 2-5 in the division. Making their first trip to Grand Junction in 11 years on Saturday, they will return to face the Mavs in the tournament semifinal round in less than two weeks as the No. 4 seed after wrapping up the regular season next Saturday against in-state rival Concordia University Irvine, which locked up the No. 2 seed with a 14-8 road win over Westminster University on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
WU will come here next Saturday to wrap up the regular season will then be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament. The Griffins, 3-3 in the division, will play the CUI Golden Eagles, currently 5-2 in the division, in the other tournament semifinal.
Game times for the post-season tournament have not yet been set.
In Saturday's win, the Mavericks scored on 22 of their 27 total shots on goal and also received solid efforts from goalies
Shaden Shields and
Luke Parrish. Shields made seven saves in the first half before Parris stopped five Penguin shots in the second half as the Mavericks were able to play their reserves throughout much of the second half.
Bibler was deadly from the "X" behind the cage and equaled
Hunter Holcomb's program record of six assists from last year's RMAC Tournament semifinals. Bibler also scored twice and finished with a career-high eight points.
Brummett was right behind with seven points, adding three assists to his four goal effort.
Connor Jensen also came off the bench to record a hat trick with three goals.
Nine other Mavs also scored once as 13 different Mavericks tickled the twine. Reserve faceoff man
Jace Evans was amongst that group and scored his first career goal after winning his own draw with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter, when goals were flying in for both teams.
The Mavs scored nine goals in the final 15 minutes as five different Maverick reserves scored in the final frame.
The Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 5-1 after the first quarter before extending the lead to 12-3 by the half.
The Mavs then went up by ten (13-3) just 2:28 into the third quarter but went without a goal for nearly 13 minutes before
Charlie Droitsch opened the fourth quarter with a marker that put the Mavs up 14-5 after the Penguins had closed the gap slightly to 13-5 after three quarters.
The Mavs still had a 9-goal lead (18-9) at the mid-way point of the fourth quarter and then scored four late goals over a span of five minutes, including two from Cooper and a man-up goal from Brummett.
The Mavs were 2-for-3 on their extra-man opportunities and finished with 53-46 advantage in total shots. Both teams ended up winning 18 faceoffs as CMU starter
Mike Edwards won 13 of 21 while scooping up seven groundballs.
Chase Pacenta led the Penguins with three goals while Tanner Ennis added two goals and three assists. Joshua Peavey won 13 of his 22 faceoffs and matched Edwards with seven groundballs.
Next Saturday's regular season finale and Senior Day game against Westminster will begin at 1 p.m.
