Senior Day Sweep

Mavs post two wins, recognize seven seniors

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of wins as the Mavericks completed a perfect 4-0 weekend with 5-0 and 4-1 triumphs over Trinidad State College and Emmanuel College, respectively, in a Saturday tri-dual here at the CMU Beach Courts.

The Mavs honored their seven seniors between the matches.

CMU had won by the same scorelines over the same opponents on Friday and are now 25-0 all-time on home sand in the 10-year history of the program.

The Mavs are 16-7 overall this season and have now won five straight matches.

The Emmanuel  Lions (12-13) began the day with a 5-0 sweep of Trinidad State.

The Mavs then did the same against the Trojans, winning all six matches, including an exhibition affair, in straight sets.  Barett Nolan and Ania Swartzendruber were the most dominant, winning 21-8, 21-8 at No. 3 over Amya Speller and Ana Vitoria Vian.

The Mavs then went on to claim another victory over the Emmanuel Lions as the Mavs won on Courts 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well as two exhibition matches in straight sets.

The Lions' lone point came in an intense Court 1 battle as Ellie Jackson and Izabel Zukowska pulled out a 21-14, 17-21, 20-18 win over CMU's Ellie Ask and Gracyn Spresser, who had earlier defeated the Trojans' top duo, 21-11, 21-7.

Meanwhile, CMU's No. 2, 3 and 4 teams went 2-0 throughout the day as each duo featured at least one recognized senior.

At 2's, Riley Daugherty and Lizzy Hood, were 21-10, 21-10 winners of Trinidad State.  They then won their final career home match, 21-9, 21-16 over EC's Leah Van Wyngarden and Kaleigh Morawietz.

Nolan, who was also recognized during Senior Day, and Swartzendruber then won 21-12, 21-10 over the Lion's Ella Johns and Izabel Miller at No. 3.

Senior Taylor Scherff and Jessica Passi were 21-14, 21-14 winners at No. 4 while Lucy Kaufman, another senior, teamed with two different partners during a 2-0 day at No. 5.   She and fellow senior Izzy Burns, were 21-13, 21-8 winners over Dakota Martinez and Allie Bishop of TSC.

Kaufman then paired with freshman Emerson Deferme for a 21-8, 21-14 win over the Lion's Aaliyah Lobendahn and Alondra Rios in the final dual.

CMU also claimed exhibition wins from Sofia Kolbe/Ava Blanco and Phoenix Slager/Jada Whitall against the Lions.
