GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks posted a pair of dominant beach volleyball wins over visiting Trinidad State College and Emmanuel College in a Friday tri-dual at the CMU Beach Courts.
The Mavericks, now 14-7 overall, won every set and match against the Trinidad State Trojans in a 5-0 victory to begin the day and won all but one match and three total sets in the 4-1 win over the Eagles, who are now 11-12 on the season.
CMU is now 23-0 all-time on home sand in the program's 10-year history.
The Mavs held the Trojans to ten or fewer points in eight of the 12 sets in their first match-up of the day.
They were then able to control the afternoon dual as well after Emmanuel blanked Trinidad State, 5-0 in between.
Against the Lions, CMU was able to win in straight sets in the second through fifth flights in the official dual and also won a 21-15, 21-11 match at 6's and won another 3-set 7's exhibition match.
Three different Maverick pairs went 2-0 throughout the day as
Riley Daugherty and
Lizzy Hood improved to 15-6 with their two Court 2 wins.
Daugherty and Hood won 21-10, 21-5 against Trinidad Stat's Sophia Quizon and Kyle Williams and then won a 21-18, 21-14 decision over Emmanuel's Kaleigh Morawietz and Leah Van Wyngarden.
Barett Nolan and
Ania Swartzendruber also continued their strong play at No. 3, winning 21-9, 21-15 against the Trojans and 21-15, 21-16 against the Lions.
Meanwhile,
Taylor Scherff and
Jessica Passi were 21-6, 21-11 winners against Trinidad State. They then won 21-14, 22-20 over Emmanuel.
The Mavs also won both matches at No. 5 as
Stormi Tadlock and
Lauren Rohlwing, won 21-15, 21-18 over TSC's Allie Bishop and Dakota Martinez.
Lucy Kaufman and
Emerson Deferme then got a start in the dual against EC, winning 21-16, 21-9 over Maisy Farrow and Faith Kelly.
Kaufman and
Sofia Kolbe also won an exhibition match against the Trojans while
Ava Blanco and
Brooke Hartman won at 6's against the Lions.
Coco Barnett and
Bella Friess also scratched out a 18-21, 21-16, 15-9 win at 7's to close out the day.
EC's lone win came at No. 1 as Izabela Zukowska and Ellie Jackson came from behind to defeat, CMU's
Gracyn Spresser and
Ellie Ask, 14-21, 21-16, 15-7. Spresser and Ask did record a 21-7, 21-16 win over Trinidad State's top duo of Ellie Ames and Alaiina Baran.
The three teams will face each other again on Saturday as the EC and TSC will open the day at 10 a.m. The Mavs and Trojans will then match-up before CMU will close out the weekend and their minimal 2025 home slate against Emmanuel. In between their matches, the Mavs will recognize seven seniors.
