BUCKEYE, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team continued their strong Arizona swing on Sunday (Mar. 23) afternoon as they played the first round of The Stack Cougar-Burro Classic at Verrado Golf Course.
The Mavericks shot a 4-over, 292 in their first round of the tournament and are two strokes ahead of Cal State East Bay, ranked No. 14 in the Clippd rankings, who shot 6-over, 294. RMAC foes Westminster and Fort Lewis are in fourth and fifth respectively in the 14-team field.
Colorado Christian, ranked No. 1 nationally, is the current team leader at 11-under, 277.
Senior
Cole Beyer picked up where he left off with a 2-under, 70 in his first round and sits in third place in the medalist chase for the tournament. The Woodburn, Ore. native finished with four birdies and two bogeys in his round. He played the back nine to a 2-under, 34 with birdies on No. 11 and No. 16 while paring the other seven holes.
Luke Wagstaff shot a 1-under, 71 and sits in sixth place after a strong round. Wagstaff finished with three birdies and two bogeys in his round and shot even on the front and 1-under on the back with birdies on No. 10 and No. 15.
Baptiste Laborde shot a 3-over, 75 and
Timmy Cavarno finished at 4-over, 76 to round out the Maverick scorers on day one.
Colorado Christian's Adam Duncan leads the tournament at 4-under, 68.
The second round is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning with the third and final round scheduled for Tuesday.
