INDIANAPOLIS— Olivia Hansson,
Mimi Licht and the women's 200-yard medley relay team all claimed top-8 finishes while
Sophia Bains and
Agata Naskret claimed consolation final wins to lead a solid day of efforts for the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.
The Maverick women picked up 72 team points throughout the day and now stand fourth in the standings through six events with 104.
The Maverick men also picked up 23 second day points and are in ninth place through five events with 45 total points. They scored in three of Wednesday's four contested events.
Hansson started the evening session with a sixth place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle as she swam to a time of 9:58.91 in a race that was decided by just three hundredths of a second. The University of Indianapolis' Andrea Gomez Espinosa claimed the win in 9:44.90, edging Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion and Championship Swimmer of the Meet Tori Meklensek of Simon Fraser. Meklensek touched in 9:44.93.
Hansson now has seven career All-America honors to her credit after helping the Mavs place third in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Maverick sophomore
Hanna Sasivarevic also swam in the evening heat but finished well back in 10:20.28, placing 27
th overall. She was making her NCAA Championship debut.
Sydnee O'Neil, who swam to a time of 10:11.09 during the morning preliminary session, ended up 17
th, just one place shy of a team point and a Second Team CSCAA All-America certificate.
Bains then claimed the consolation final win in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:01.94 to place ninth overall. She now has four total all-America honors in her career.
Minutes later, Naskret claimed a heat win, finishing the 50 freestyle in 22.76 seconds, just off her own month-old school-record of 22.72. She also placed ninth thanks to the consolation final win.
Naskret then came back to team with
Antonia Leese,
Kiara Borchardt and
Elli Williams to claim a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay. The Mav quartet finished in 1:39.71 as Naskret claimed her second all-America honor of the day and her ninth of her career. Seven of those are first team accolades, which go to the top eight finishers.
Leese, a newcomer to the Maverick program this season, earned her first while Borchardt now has seven. Williams is a 5-time honoree and is serving as the Mavs' relay only swimmer this week.
In between Naskret's efforts, Amelia Licht took eighth in the 1-meter diving competition, scoring 388.10 points, nearly matching her preliminary round score of 388.60. Licht is a First Team CSCAA All-American for the first time in her career.
In the men's meet,
Jacob Troescher swam to a career-best time of 9:14.62 in the fastest seeded section of the 1,000 free, contested during the evening session. He ended up tied for 16
th place overall with teammate
Gavyn Tatge, who posted an identical time in morning session. Thanks to the tie, both men earned their first career all-America honors and split the team point.
German freshman
Richard Schmiedefeld then picked up a 13
th place finish in the 50 free, finishing the finals in 19.98 seconds. He set a career-best mark of 19.93 in the prelims after coming into the meet ranked 23
rd in the discipline.
Schmiedefeld then anchored the Maverick men to a ninth place time of 1:26.10 in the 200 medley relay, which was contested over two heats. The Maverick quartet of
Andrew Scoggin,
Forrest Frazier,
Dejan Urbanek and Schmiedefeld finished third in their heat. Scoggin is now a 6-time relay All-American while Urbanek picked up his 13th career all-America certificate. Frazier, a graduate transfer from Division I Cal, was swimming in his first NCAA Championship race while Schmiedefeld now has three all-America honors this week.
The 5-day meet continues on Thursday with preliminary heats in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM and 200 Freestyle, starting at 10 a.m. EDT (8 a.m. Mountain) Men's 3-meter diving preliminaries will begin at 1 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. Mountain). The evening session, which will include finals in all of those events and the 400 Medley relay will begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. Mountain).
