Thyne picks up RMAC First Team All-Academic plaudits

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's Austin Thyne was selected to the 2024-25 First Team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Men's Basketball Team, which was announced on Wednesday.

The elementary education major from Sterling, Colorado, who graduated from Scottsbluff High School in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, holds a 3.96 GPA.

The 10-man first team was selected by a vote of each institution's athletic communications directors, based on a combination of athletic and academic performances.  To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA, have used a season of eligibility and have competed two consecutive semesters at their current institution.

Those not selected to the first team automatically qualify for the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll, which includes a 3.30 or higher GPA requirement as well as the other criteria.

A total of 62 student-athletes, including the ten first team selections, were named to the honor roll.

Thyne was named to that honor roll last year as a redshirt freshman in 2023-24, when he played in nine game.  He played an expanded role on this year's Maverick squad, featuring in 24 games and making two starts, helping the Mavs go 19-9 overall while finishing tied for third in the RMAC standings with a 13-7 record.

He shot 40.0 percent from beyond the arc, hitting on 14 of 35 3-point attempts and scored 56 points while grabbing 19 rebounds this season.  He also dished out 11 assists and registered seven steals.

Notably, his wife Olivia Reed Thyne, a standout on the Maverick women's team, was named as the RMAC Women's Academic Player of the Year for the second straight season on Wednesday.
