GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball program continues to build out its roster for the 2026-27 season with a six-player freshman class pulled from some of the deepest high school basketball in the state of Colorado. The incoming group features four players out of the talent-rich Denver metro area and two from Northern Colorado, headlined by a pair of state champions, two 1,000-plus career performers, and multiple all-state and all-league honorees.
"We're excited to welcome this strong and decorated freshman class to CMU this fall," head coach
Ken DeWeese said. "As a staff, we strive to bring in players embody the culture and character of Colorado Mesa University. With this class, we believe we executed that plan. This group includes state champions, all-state selections, not to mention, all are young men of high character! We look forward to seeing this group grow and develop over the course of their time here!"
Here's a closer look at the Mavericks' newest signees.
Davis May | Guard | 6-4, 180 | Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Rock Canyon
May was a key offensive weapon for a Rock Canyon team that captured the program's first-ever boys basketball state championship this past season. He led the Jaguars with 19 points in their 6A Final Four semifinal win, then delivered down the stretch of the title game itself — slicing through defenders for a go-ahead pull-up three and adding four straight free throws in the fourth quarter of Rock Canyon's 68-58 win over Ralston Valley for the 6A crown. May spent the season ranked among the state's top prospects in the 2026 class and gives Colorado Mesa a guard who has already delivered winning plays in March.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: "One of our state champion signees, Davis brings great winning experience and intangibles coming from the program at Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch. Davis is a versatile big guard with a diverse skill set to match. His willingness to do all the "little things" to win give him a great foundation to build upon as a player."
Kai Valentine | Forward | 6-8, 205 | Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Rock Canyon
May's championship running mate, Valentine was a do-it-all forward who earned All-State recognition as a senior. In Rock Canyon's state title win, Valentine scored 15 points — including seven in the fourth quarter — and gave the Jaguars the lead back with a gritty inside basket in the closing minutes. He brings a physical, winning-program pedigree to the Maverick frontcourt.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: ""Another state champ from Rock Canyon, Kai is an athletic and high-motor front-court player. He has the great intangible of a willingness to out-work his opponent. Kai has great upside and versatility that we really value. With his continued growth and development, Kai can be a match-up issue for opposing teams in the RMAC"
Aidan Perez | Wing | 6-7, 185 | Dallas, Texas / Rangeview (Colo.)
A 6-foot-6 wing, Perez was named to the All-City League team as a senior after helping Rangeview to one of the most dominant regular seasons in the state, including a stretch of 20-plus straight wins. As a junior, he shot 49 percent from the field and was a high-volume rebounder for his position. His signature moment came in the 6A Great 8 round, when he buried a corner three late in regulation to help force overtime in a double-overtime win over Regis Jesuit that sent Rangeview to the Final Four at the Denver Coliseum — a game in which he scored a team-best eight points down the stretch.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: "Aidan embodies much of what we look for in young players. He has a versatile skill-set and basketball build. His frame and length paired with his ability to do a little bit of everything on the perimeter gives us a great weapon and match-up nightmare for opponents. Aidan knows what winning looks like after great years at front-range powerhouse, Rangeview High School."
Cash Boykin | Wing | 6-6, 205 | Littleton, Colo. / Columbine
Boykin closed out his prep career as a 1,000-point scorer, surpassing the milestone with an emphatic dunk during his senior season. A 6-foot-4 forward who led Columbine in scoring as a junior at roughly 20 points per game, Boykin's senior-year highlights included a 31-point, 10-rebound, four-steal, two-block performance and a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in a win over Dakota Ridge. He gives the Mavericks a proven, high-usage scorer who can put the ball on the floor and finish above the rim.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: "Cash is a proven scorer and has the physical tools to be an exceptional player in his time at CMU. Once again, he is a young man of high character and "care-factor". His ability to use his mature frame, strength and athleticism to his advantage gives us another versatile and long weapon on the perimeter. One of the better scorers on the front range the last couple seasons, we look forward to Cash making an impact at Mesa!"
Brady Kingsley | Guard | 5-10, 175 | Windsor, Colo. / Windsor
Kingsley earned All-State recognition out of Northern Colorado as a senior, capping a career in which he was a consistent scoring threat for the Wizards. He has shown the ability to carry an offensive workload, including a 16-point effort on 15 shot attempts in a tightly contested game against perennial Front Range power Valor Christian. Kingsley adds another ball-handling, shot-creating guard to the Maverick backcourt.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: "Brady comes from a great High School program at Windsor High School in Northern Colorado. He's another state champion that understands what it takes to win at the highest levels. Brady is a proven perimeter shooter, who also has the ability to play-make at the guard spot. His willingness to work hard every day and improve, is a trait we value!"
Luke Williams | Forward | 6-10, 225 | Parker, Colo. / Chaparral
Williams earned CHSAA/MaxPreps All-State Second Team honors as a senior after a junior season in which he averaged 10.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 4.1 blocks per game while shooting 64 percent from the field — numbers that earned him Chaparral's Best Defensive Player award and broke the program's single-game and single-season blocks records. Williams' shot-blocking and interior scoring efficiency make him one of the most productive bigs in this signing class.
Coach DeWeese's Comments: "Luke comes to CMU from another winning front range High School program, Chaparral High School. His combination of size and skill is coveted in the college game. At 6'10, Luke can dribble, pass and shoot. This gives him the capacity to be an initiator in our offense. Having a front-court player of his size and skill level, while also being an exceptional shot-blocker, gives our team a valuable weapon!"
