GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa University Director of Athletics
Rob Courtney announced the hiring of Ken DeWeese as the next Head Men's Basketball Coach on Thursday (Apr. 9) morning.
"My family and I are extremely grateful and excited to be joining the Colorado Mesa Maverick family," DeWeese said. "I want to thank athletic director
Rob Courtney and President John Marshall for believing in me and my vision for the program. Throughout the process, the alignment in values and the commitment to success was evident."
DeWeese becomes the seventh coach in program history and inherits a program that went 21-11 and made the NCAA Tournament during the 2025-26 season.
"CMU has always been a program on my radar. The pride the University and the longstanding success of the men's basketball program, along with so many of the other great programs, made the opportunity an easy choice to pursue," DeWeese added.
Coach DeWeese spent the last two seasons at Colorado State where he helped the Rams to a 47-23 record and a Mountain West Conference Tournament Title in 2025. CSU played in the NCAA Tournament that season and knocked off Memphis in the First Round of the tournament. He coached an NBA First Round Draft pick in Nique Clifford during the season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Ken DeWeese to lead our men's basketball program," Director of Athletics
Rob Courtney said. "Ken has a proven track record of success at multiple levels, and his ability to develop student-athletes while building winning programs made him stand out throughout the search process. We're confident he will continue to be an elite recruiter and continue the strong tradition of Maverick basketball."
Prior to his time at Colorado State, he was the associate head coach at Wyoming for four seasons. He helped the Cowboys earn an NCAA Tournament at-large berth after defeating Washington, Grand Canyon, South Florida and Northern Iowa and elevating the program into the AP Top-25 poll, peaking at No. 22.
While in Laramie he coached six All-Mountain West honorees and the 2021 Freshman of the Year Marcus Williams.
Prior to his time in Laramie, DeWeese was on staff at Northern Colorado from 2016-20. He helped the Bears to the program's first postseason title winning the CIT in 2018 as the team won a program-best 26 games. Over his final three years in Greeley, the program won a three-year best mark of 69 games and finished inside the top 100 of the NET ratings his final season.
DeWeese mentored Big Sky Player of the Year Jordan Davis, three-time Defensive Player of the Year Johan Radabaugh, Sixth Man of the Year Kai Edwards and Freshman of the Year Bodie Hume over his career.
He made previous stops at VCU, Idaho, Mary Hardin Baylor, Utah Valley and UTEP before his three Division I regional opportunities.
"The outstanding culture of CMU Athletics begins with coaches and leaders who bring our values to life on and off the court," said CMU President John Marshall. "I am confident Coach DeWeese will build on the strong tradition of character and culture that is CMU basketball and will help us model what Division II athletics is all about."
DeWeese is a graduate of Mary Hardin Baylor (NCAA III, Belton, Texas) where he played for three seasons and earned a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He went on to earn a masters degree in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth where he was also a graduate assistant coach for the basketball program.
