GOLDEN, Colo. – In a top 25 match up of the nation's best wrestling teams, the #16 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers got the best of the Mavericks this evening as the #25 Colorado Mesa University Men's Wrestling Team were defeated 23-15.
With the dual loss, Mines claimed the RMAC Championship for the 2024-25 season as the Mavs needed a win tonight to at least capture a share of the championship.
Colorado Mesa will now look to wrestle twice more this regular season before preparing for NCAA Regionals and Championships which begin in March.
Securing the team's wins in tonight's ranked dual were the quartet of Keyton Young, Owen Cline, Gabriel Carranza and Tyler Doyle. Cline was the only wrestler to win by tech fall with the three others coming via decision.
Starting the night the Orediggers collected a quick 10-0 lead as they won the first three matches, with all three featuring ranked wrestlers.
#9 Christian Lopez of Mines and #7 Dayson Torgerson were the first to hit the mat at the 125 pounds weight class with Lopez closely defeating Torgerson 9-5 after three tightly contested periods.
#14 Oran Huff suffered a major decision loss to Trebor Moreno 14-3 and Mines followed with #4 Grayston DiBlasi narrowly beating Denim Torgerson 5-0 in the 141 pound bout.
Responding to the deficit, Keyton Young and Owen Cline got the Mavs on the board as the two won their bouts. Young beat Benjamin Fanelli 7-3 at 149 pounds for three team points with Cline defeating #11 Marcus Caro in the 157 pounds class by tech fall (18-3) to earn five team points. Cline's five team points were the highest earned by any wrestler for Colorado Mesa.
Only leading by two points now, the Orediggers unfortunately went on to win the next three matches as well with them earning a pin in the 165 pounds class, a decision victory in the 174 pounds class and a major decision victory in 184 pounds. Mines' final ranked wrestler to compete in the night was in the 174 pounds class as #14 Wyatt Reisz defeated Gus Dalton 8-3.
#10 Gabriel Carranza and #13 Tyler Doyle were both able to win the final two matches, but even with pin victories the team trailed too much to overtake the Orediggers. Carranza won his match by major decision (11-1) at 197 pounds and Doyle won by decision at 285 by a score of 8-2.
No extra matches took place tonight.
