PUEBLO, Colo. – The #25 Colorado Mesa University Men's Wrestling Team used an early 16-point lead to hold out in a tightly contested RMAC dual this afternoon as they defeated CSU Pueblo in a 25-19 victory.
With the win the Mavericks stay undefeated on the season as they are 9-0 in dual meets (5-0 RMAC) and can clinch a share of the conference title with a win tomorrow against #16 Colorado School of Mines.
In tonight's dual the Mavs the won four out of the first five matches with two of them coming via forfeit. They led 19-3 through those bouts, before being outscored in the final five bouts, 16-6. The two six-point forfeits served as key scoring moments for the Mavs as there was only one other six-point match on the night.
Securing the wins in their bouts were #7 Dayson Torgerson, Denim Torgerson, Keyton Young, Owen Cline, Gus Dalton and Tyler Doyle.
Earning the two forfeit victories were the Torgerson brothers who went without opponents to wrestle while Keyton Young was the only member of the team to win by major decision. Young defeated Cole Bennett in the 149 pounds class 10-1.
Gus Dalton won by sudden victory in the 174 pounds class as he defeated Solomon Arnds-Volcin after being tied through three periods of action.
Owen Cline and Tyler Doyle won their matches by decision, with Cline's coming at 157 pounds by a score of 10-3 and Doyle's coming in the 285 pounds at 7-2.
Cline's match at the 157 pounds class came over CSUP's Cyruss Meeks who was the Pack's lone qualifier for the NCCA National Tournament last season as well.
Doyle's victory in the heavy weight class also helped solidify the win as the only way the Thunderwolves could overtake the Mavs was by a major decision, tech fall or a pin.
Three other extra matches also occurred for the Mavs, with them dropping two of them before Ruben Samuelson won by pin in the 285 pounds class in 1:13.
