KINGSVILLE, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team rolled to a pair of 4-1 wins and improved to 6-2 on the season, defeating host Texas A&M-Kingsville and Wayland Baptist on Friday during the Javelina Beach Showdown.
The Mavs were good at the top of their lineup as the first, second and third pairs both went 2-0, while winning six of seven combined sets.
No. 2 duo
Riley Daugherty and
Lizzy Hood moved to 8-0 on the season as they recorded a 22-20, 21-16 win over the Javelinas' Kalani Vasquez and Madelyn Wallace in the morning before winning 21-10, 21-15 against the Wayland Baptist Pioneers, a first year NAIA program, later in the day.
Those victories gave the Mavs early 1-0 in both duals.
Against TAMUK, the Javelinas were able to claim a 3-set win at No. 4 to level the score.
However, CMU's
Izzy Burns and
Lucy Kaufman won 21-14, 23-21 at No. 5 before top-flight pair
Gracyn Spresser and
Ellie Ask, pulled out a tight 3-set win by an 18-21, 21-14, 16-14 margin over Liana Huesca and Rylan Pollard to clinch the dual.
Barett Nolan and
Ania Swartzendruber then completed the Mavs' overall victory with a 21-12, 17-21, 15-11 win at No. 3. They defeated Laura Betsa and Taylor McCarthy and are now 7-1 on the season after posting a comfortable 21-15, 21-13 win against the Pioneers later in the day.
Spresser and Ask also dominated their match against WBU, winning 21-4, 21-10 to clinch the dual.
Meanwhile,
Jessica Passi and
Taylor Scherff also claimed a 21-11, 22-20 win over the Pioneers after dropping their No. 4 match against the host Javelinas, who had come into the dual with a perfect 4-0 team record.
CMU will continue the tournament on Saturday morning, playing NCAA Division I foes UTEP and Tarleton State.
