Mavs play stellar defensive game in 12-3 road win

CMU program moves to 3-0 in 2025 with eighth straight overall win

LIBERTY, Mo.— In the initial meeting between the two teams, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks held William Jewell College scoreless for just over 50 minutes and cruised to a 12-3 regional road win over the Cardinals on Sunday here at the William Jewell Soccer & Lacrosse Field.
 
The Mavericks, ranked 15th in the latest USILA Division II Coaches' Poll, improved to 3-0 on the season and have now won eight straight and 13 of their last 14 games dating back to 2024. 
 
The Cardinals fell to 2-2 on the season.
 
The Mavericks took an 11-0 lead early in the fourth quarter before conceding a goal with 9:59 to go in the game.
 
The Mavs took more than five minutes to score but tallied three goals in a 2 ½-minute stretch spanning the first and second quarters to build a 4-0 lead. 
 
After leading 5-0 at halftime, the Mavs then scored four goals in a span of just 93 seconds early in the third quarter to build a 9-0 lead.
 
After going over the 100 career goal mark in their last game against Dominican on Monday, JJ Brummett recorded his first hat-trick of the season, scoring three goals on a game-high ten shots.  He scored twice with two goals just seven seconds apart in the first quarter and added his third goal with 11:58 left in the third as part of the Mavs' 5-goal scoring barrage.
 
Connor Jensen, who had scored four goals in each of CMU's first two games, added two more in Sunday's win over the Cardinals.  Logan Smith also added two goals while Eli Bibler, Jack Cooper, Mike Edwards, Caden Hathaway and Erich Petersen each scored one.
 
Petersen's goal was a man down goal just 25 seconds after the Cardinals' finally got on the scoreboard.
 
Edwards also dominated the possession game, winning 10 of his 12 faceoff battles as the Mavericks won 16 of the 19 overall.   The Mavs also finished with a 48-34 advantage in groundballs as Edward scooped up seven
 
With a lion's share of the possession, the Mavericks were able to take 52 shots while holding the Cardinals to just 19.  CMU took at least ten shots in every quarter.
 
Brady Porter recorded three caused turnovers and three groundballs to lead the Mavericks' impressive defensive performance that forced the Cardinals into committing 27 turnovers.
 
Shaden Shields finished with five saves without allowing a goal in the first half before Luke Parrish played the third quarter and into the fourth before giving way to Grant Brooker for the final 9:47.
 
Cardinal goalie Fynn Ziebarth was busy throughout the day and made 23 saves.
 
The Mavs will remain in the area for a Tuesday showdown against Rockhurst University (2-3) at the Hawks' Bourke Field in Kansas City.
