KANSAS CITY, Mo.— JJ Brummett had a massive 5-goal, 8-point game while
Carson Points and
Connor Jensen both recorded hat-tricks while scoring seven combined goals to lead the nation's 14
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University men's lacrosse team to a dominant 18-8 road win over the Rockhurst University Hawks on Tuesday afternoon here at Bourke Field.
The Mavs, who are now 4-0 overall and winners of nine straight games dating back to last year, out-scored the Hawks 14-2 in the middle two quarters, going on a 5-0 runs in both the second and third frames.
Rockhurst, receiving votes in this week's USILA Division II Coaches' poll, fell to 2-4.
The Mavs got out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Points and Brummett but fell behind 4-2 at the end of the first quarter as the Hawks scored twice just ten seconds apart in the final minute of the opening period to take the lead.
However, the Mavs answered right back early in the second quarter with Points and Jensen scoring just eight seconds apart to tie the game.
Logan Smith then tallied a go-ahead goal with 9:31 left in the frame before Brummett tallied his second goal of the game just six seconds later after
Mike Edwards won the face-off before sending the ball to Brummett for the quick tally.
Deuce Kirschke then put the Mavs up 7-4 with 5:57 to go before Jensen made the score 8-5 with 18 seconds to go in the first half.
The Mavs then went on a 5-0 scoring barrage in the third quarter with Points,
Dillon Pless, Brummett, Smith and Jensen scoring goals in the first ten minutes of the second half.
The Mavs led 13-5 at that point and after giving up a goal to the Hawks, went on another 5-goal scoring run in the final 4 ½ minutes of the third and the first half of the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks also played a solid defensive game as
Shaden Shields made 11 saves in a complete game in effort.
The Mavs also scooped up 33 groundballs and caused ten of the Hawks' 17 turnovers.
Kanyan Rhodes won 10 of 15 faceoff battles and tallied a game-high five groundballs while Edwards won five of eight draws while claiming four groundballs.
Ryan Pless and
Brady Porter had two caused turnovers a piece.
After sweeping their California and Missouri road trips with four wins in a span of just 11 days, the Mavericks will now have 2 ½ weeks off before continuing their season with a trip to Florida to face Florida Southern, Florida Tech and Saint Leo in a span of six days from Mar. 15-20.
