GUNNISON, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Gaby Horton and
Jordan Burnett posted Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leading and improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times while winning the 200 and 400 meters, respectively, at the RMAC Last Chance Meet, hosted by Western Colorado University on Friday here in the Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
Those efforts were two of the 28 season-best marks that the Maverick indoor track & field team set throughout the day as several other athletes improved their stock for potential qualification for next weekend's RMAC Championships in Colorado Springs.
Horton set an indoor personal-record of 24.25 seconds in the 200, likely securing a spot in next month's NCAA Division II Championships. With the track-size and altitude conversions, her time converts to 24.02 and will rank her as high as tenth on the national list with the top 18 declared athletes at the end of the regular season receiving a spot in the meet. Horton had come into the meet ranked 23
rd nationally at 24.28 seconds.
Meanwhile, Burnett took over the RMAC lead, winning the 400 in 56.17 seconds, a time that converts to 55.65 on the conference and national performance lists. She moved up more than 20 spots to as high as 29
th on the national list and past MSU Denver's Naleia Sowell on the RMAC list.
Meanwhile,
Rimari Facey and
Jessie Schaffer likely secured RMAC Championship spots in the 60-meter hurdles as the pair finished third and fourth, respectively, with new career-best times. Facey finished in 9.23 seconds and now ranks 13th on the RMAC list with an altitude-adjusted mark of 9.27 while Schaffer was clocked in 9.34 seconds (9.38-converted) to stand 17
th on the conference list and on the inside of the RMAC Championship selection bubble as of Friday night,
The duo also set new career-best times in the 200 meters, with Facey finishing in 26.13 to place sixth while Schaffer was ninth in 27.03 seconds.
Kiona Gonzales-Gibbs also set a pair of career-best times, finishing fifth in the 200 at 26.09 after running to a time of 8.11 seconds in the 60-meter dash. She sits 21
st on the RMAC list in the 200 with a converted mark of 25.83 and could possibly receive one of the 18 available spots in the conference meet if at least three of the runners ahead of her do not declare.
Olivia Langner also likely earned a RMAC Championship spot in the high jump, clearing 1.51 meters (4-11.5) to place third on the day while moving into a 14
th place tie on the conference list.
Addy Kirkpatrick may have also done just enough to qualify in the long jump, setting a season-best mark of 5.31 meters (17-5.25) to move into 20
th on the conference list. Like, Gonzales-Gibbs, she will need athletes in front of her to not declare for the conference meet.
On the men's side, three different Maverick freshmen moved up or in to the top 18 on the RMAC performance lists.
On the track,
Roman Sackman finished third in the 60 meters with a time of 6.92 seconds, allowing him to move into a tie for ninth on the Mavs' all-time top 10 performers list. He is now tied for 14th on the RMAC list with his altitude-adjusted mark of 6.96.
Meanwhile, throwers
Kaiden Major and
Van Chambers both enjoyed the best day of their young collegiate careers.
Major took fourth in the shot put with a mark of 15.03 meters (49 feet, 3 ¾ inches) and now ranks ninth on the RMAC performance list. He was 19
th and on the outside of the selection bubble coming into the meet. Major also moved up two spots to fifth in CMU indoor history.
Meanwhile, Chambers also set a career-best of 13.78 meters (45-2.5) to place eighth on the day while moving to 22nd on the conference list and to ninth in program history.
Chambers also took fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 17.02 meters (55-10.25), moving up four spots to fifth in program history and more importantly to ninth on the RMAC list. He was outside of the top 25 in the conference coming in.
Major also set a career-best of 14.94 meters (49-0.25) in the weight throw to rank 18th in the RMAC. He was 20
th on the conference list coming into the meet and may have done just enough to qualify for the RMAC Championships in the weight throw as well.
