GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Needing a valiant comeback to win the night, the #25 Colorado Mesa University Men's Wrestling Team suffered a tough 29-16 defeat tonight as they were taken down by #13 Western Colorado University in the Bank of Colorado Battle of Brownson.
Avenging their earlier loss in the season when the Mavs won their first dual meet 31-12, the Mountaineers won soundly tonight taking victories in six of the weight classes with three of them coming via pin.
Of the Mavs' four wins, two of them were from tech falls with the other two coming from decisions. Both Dayson Torgerson and Tyler Doyle were the winners by technical fall with the decision victories coming from Owen Cline and Gabriel Carranza.
Opening the night, the Mavs took an early 5-0 lead as #7 Dayson Torgerson won 19-3 by technical fall taking down Roberto Estrada handily before the Mountaineers won three straight bouts and collected 12 points in retaliation.
Down 12-5, Owen Cline secured another win for the Mavs as he got a 7-1 decision over Vinny Cabral. This served as Cline's third straight victory this season with him earning two wins last week.
Following Cline, the Mountaineers once again won three more bouts totaling 17 points and digging Colorado Mesa into a 21-point hole.
Despite not being able to capture the dual win anymore, both #10 Gabriel Carranza and #13 Tyler Doyle were able to end the night on a high note with each of them winning their respective bouts.
Carranza secured himself a 9-6 decision victory thanks to a last second takedown of Sage Harrison at 197 pounds to not force overtime while Doyle emphatically won the heavyweight bout by a 21-3 tech fall win.
