GOLDEN, Colo.— Katie Thomson won the pentathlon while other Colorado Mesa University Mavericks indoor track & field athletes took second place in all five events that they competed in during a solid day of action at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi on Saturday here in the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks also combined for three new marks on the program's all-time top 10 charts.
Thomson, the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion scored 3,249 points in the pentathlon, faring second best in the 6-woman field in three of the first four disciplines before winning the 800-meter race in two minutes, 34.82 seconds. She also set three new season-bests in an overall solid effort, posting marks of 9.25 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, 5.07 meters (16-7.75) in the long jump and 1.46 meters (4-9.5) in the high jump. She also had a shot put effort of 11.11 meters (36-5.5) and took overall the event lead with that mark.
Meanwhile, freshman teammate
Kaitlyn Pearson racked up 3,078 points to take second while moving into the No. 9 spot of CMU history. She won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.24 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (17-3.5) while adding two additional career-best marks of 1.46 meters (4-9.5) in the high jump and 2:36.08 in the 800 meters.
Elsewhere,
Hope Matteson took second in the high jump as she and freshman
Atahlia Mills, who was third on tie-breaking procedures, both cleared 1.62 meters (5.3.75) as Mills moved into a tie for tenth place on the Maverick all-time lists.
Kaelea Gibson also cleared 1.56 meters (5-1.25) to finish fourth.
School record-holder
Augustine Hancock was the Mavs' second place finisher in the women's weight throw as she registered a mark of 17.15 meters (56-3.25).
Christina Palmer also had a season-best of 15.15 meters (49-8.5) to take fourth place while
Aaliyah Bos finished seventh with a throw of 14.37 meters (47-1.75).
In the triple jump,
Kendra Ritzmann finished second, recording an effort of 11.07 meters (36-4) on her opening attempt.
Meanwhile, freshman
Van Chambers took second in the men's weight throw with an effort of 16.17 meters (53-0.75), allowing him to move into ninth place on CMU's all-time list.
