GOLDEN, Colo.— Antone Higgs won the long jump with a mark of 7.22 meters (23 feet, 8 ¼ inches) and broke the 7-second barrier to take second place in the 60 meters while leading a contingent of Colorado Mesa University Mavericks at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi indoor track & field meet on Friday here at the Colorado School of Mines.
Higgs also ran to a season-best time of 6.96 seconds in the 60 but was edged by Mines' Jathan Busby in a photo finish.
Teammate
Roman Sackman also made the final in the 60 meters and placed fourth in 7.02 seconds after matching Higgs' time of 6.96 in the preliminary round. Sackman also took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.56 meters (21-6.25) while fellow freshman
Hayden Moreno finished third at 6.85 meters (22-5.75).
The Mavs also fared well in the shot put as school record holder
Christina Palmer took second in the women's competition with a mark of 13.08 meters (42-11) while
Aaliyah Bos finished fifth at 11.20 meters (36-9).
Freshman
Kaiden Major also took fifth in the men's event with a season-best throw of 14.00 meters (45-11.25) to move up two spots to seventh in CMU history.
Van Chambers also finished seventh with a heave of 12.88 meters (42-3.25).
On the track,
Waycee Harvey finished third in the women's 60 meters with a season-best time of 8.06 seconds while
Emily Hruby matched her season best to take fifth in 8.45 seconds.
Meanwhile, freshman
Atahlia Mills placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a season-best time of 9.24 seconds.
Hope Matteson also took sixth in a season-best 9.43 seconds.
The Maverick women also have seven entrants in the women's long jump.
Lily Nieslanik led the group, placing fourth with a career-best mark of 5.49 meters (18-0.25). Harvey finished sixth with a leap of 5.35 meters (17-6.75).
The meet continues on Saturday.
The Mavericks will also have a larger contingent of runners at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder and a smaller group of athletes at the Big Red Machine Open in Gunnison on Saturday.
