Arvada, Colo.- Colorado Mesa visits the Colorado School of Mines for a two game series in Arvada before the holiday break.
The Mavs looked to keep rolling after going 2-1 in their three game homestand but also wanted to get that loss back as they faced Mines on the road. In game one, Mines would come out hot with multiple shots on goal keeping the Mavs in their own end. They would score the games first goal off of a bad bounce and looked to add to their lead as the Mavs took a penalty. However, Freshman Jacob Roggie would receive a pass from Sophomore Connor Hassenstab and bury a short handed goal to tie the game at one. Mines would get the goal right back scoring off the faceoff, but would take a penalty moments later that the Mavs would take advantage of as Senior Larry Simons would score to once again tie the game. Mines would take advantage of the Mavs defensive miscues scoring two more goals before the end of the period.
In the second the Mavs would clean up their defensive play before they would be awarded a powerplay where Simons would score his second of the game cutting Mines lead down to one. Mines would answer less than 10 seconds later to take back a two goal lead and then would capitalize on a power play two minutes after. The Mavs would get one back as Freshman Marcus Ray would score his team leading 13th goal of the season.
The third was the closest played period as both teams traded opportunities but could not find the back of the net until the Mavericks were rewarded a powerplay where Junior Mason Ripley would get the Mavericks within one with seven minutes to play. The Mavs would get many opportunities but Mines would shut the door. The Mavs would fall 6-5 in game one.
Game two was less than ideal for the Mavs as they would let up three goals in the first two of which were powerplays. The Mavs would let up another in the second and one more in the third before Roggie would get the Mavs on the board. Mines would add to their lead before Simons would score his 3rd of the weekend with a beautiful tip in, but it was too little too late. The Mavs would fall 6-2 in game two.
The Mavs will travel to Florida before the long winter break to play Florida Gulf Coast University. The Mavericks will host the United States AirForce Academy in late January to kick off a 5 game stand.
