Grand Junction, CO.- Colorado Mesa hosted Grand Canyon University for a one game series for the 9th Annual Pink the Rink game.
For the Mavericks most important game of the year they had revenge on their mind as GCU beat the Mavericks earlier in the season. The 9th Annual Pink the Rink was packed, selling out the RiverCity Sportplex. However, the rowdy crowd would be quieted early as GCU would score early. Just minutes later the Mavericks would spring life back into the crowd when Freshman Dylan Sowa would find Senior Levi Krantz back door to tie the game. The Mavericks would get numerous powerplay opportunities throughout the period but it would stay tied.Â
The Mavericks would start the second period on the powerplay and would break through as Junior Mason Ripley would find Senior Larry Simons who would carry the puck across the ice firing the opposite way to put the Mavericks up one. The Mavericks would play stellar defense all around throughout the second and third even killing off a double minor. Sophomore goaltender John Hickam would lead the way with an outstanding 41 saves as the Mavericks would go on to win 2-1.Â
The 9th Annual Pink the Rink was a success not only on the ice but off it too. We would like to thank everyone in attendance and any donors or silent auction attendees online. The Mavericks will finish off the season next weekend against Colorado College with Saturday being Alumni Night and Sunday Senior day.Â
