Over the weekend the Mavericks traveled to Nebraska to play the University of Omaha, and the University of Nebraska.
The weekend started off hot as the Mavericks came out with energy against the Cornhuskers. It started off quick as the Mavericks would go up two in the first period with both goals coming from senior Brain White. The action wouldn't stop there as quickly into the second period freshman Nate Cardenas would net one on a two on one to give the Mavericks a three goal lead. Later on in the period freshman Owen Herrsink would score a Michigan goal on the power play to give the Mavericks a four goal lead heading into the third period. In the third period we would see a lot of back and fourth action as the Cornhuskers were looking to even the score. The Mavericks would fight back hard as White would go on to score two more goals giving the Mavericks a 6 goal lead to finish the game. This was a great way for the Mavericks to start off the weekend as senior goalie John Hickam would post his first shutout of the year saving every shot he faced.
The second game of the three game road trip would take the Mavericks to the University of Omaha where the Mavs would play two games. The first game was a test for the Mavericks as Omaha came out flying and were looking to put a stop to the win streak. Despite their best efforts the Mavericks would ultimately give up eight goals and lose the first of the two games against Omaha.
The third game again featured the Mavericks against the University of Omaha. This game started out very well as the Mavericks came out flying scoring the first two goals of the game early on. Freshman Ryan Carmichael would start the scoring for the Mavericks which would soon be followed up by senior Brian White netting another. Despite the Mavericks best efforts to hold Omaha off they would ultimately lose the lead and go into the second period down one goal. The second period would start rough for the Mavericks as Omaha would go on to score three more goals, until freshman Owen Heersink would score on the power play late in the second to cut the lead down to four. Despite the Mavericks best efforts to get back into the game they would ultimately lose 10 to 3 to Omaha for their second loss of the season and second loss of the road trip.
Despite the rough weekend for the Mavericks out in Nebraska they look forward to welcoming Colorado School of Mines for Homecoming weekend at RiverCity Sportsplex.
