GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University outside hitter
Sadie Scoville and libero
Allison Waller celebrated their Senior Night win in style as Scoville put smashed her career-high with 29 kills while Waller had a team-high 18 digs in the Mavericks' 4-set win over visiting Regis University on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena.
Scoville also hit .410 and put down seven kills in the first set, five in the second, nine in the third and eight in the fourth as the Mavericks won their second straight match by a 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-10 margin. They improved to 14-9 overall and to 8-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Rangers fell to 3-21 and 2-10 in the RMAC guaranteeing their worst season in program history.
Combined with other Saturday results from around the conference, the Mavs are now in a 3-way tie for fourth place with the Colorado School of Mines and Fort Lewis in the conference standings pending CSU Pueblo's match at New Mexico Highlands, the final RMAC match on the day's docket.
Mines and Fort Lewis both lost on Saturday while CSU Pueblo entered their match against the Cowgirls with a 7-3 conference record and will play three matches next week.
Scoville's kill total smashed her former career-high of 21 as a junior in 2024 at CSU Pueblo and the most for any Maverick in a single match since Mackenzie Edwards put down 33 kills against Fort Lewis on Sept. 30, 2017. Scoville's former best as a Maverick this season was 19.
Her 29 kills were also the tied for fourth most in CMU's rally-scoring era (2001-Present) and the most of any RMAC player in a 4-set match this season.
The Mavs hit .257 as a team as freshman setter
Ashlyn Tafoya recorded 33 assists and 15 digs for her ninth double-double of the campaign.
Sophomore outside hitter
Karsen Breeding also recorded 14 kills to significantly aid the victory.
Scoville, Waller and
Charleston Tidwell, who has been out due to injury for two months, were recognized in pre-match festivities.
Regis' outside hitter Isabella Smith also had a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs while libero Krissy Brei recorded 19 digs to lead all players. Freshman Sabrina Landman, a Grand Junction native, also had 11 kills and eight digs for the Rangers, who were held to a .109 team attack percentage.
The Mavericks routed the Rangers in the second and fourth sets hitting .395 and .480, respectively as a team. They also out-hit the Rangers, .233-.214 despite dropping the third set after only being able to hit .043 in a sloppy first set that saw the Mavs commit 11 hitting errors.
Despite that, the Mavs were able to pull out the opening frame as they went on a 9-5 run at the end, a spurt that included four Scoville kills in a 6-rally stretch that was only halted by two Maverick service errors. Breeding then added back-to-back ills to give the Mavs a 23-21 lead that proved to be enough as a Ranger hitting error and service error pushed the Mavs to the opening set victory.
The Mavs never trailed in the second set and went on a 7-0 run that featured three consecutive Breeding kills and a Tafoya service ace to build a 20-9 lead.
The Mavs then later led 24-11 before the Rangers made the scoreline tighter with a 5-0 spurt of their own.
The third set proved to be the tightest of the evening as the Rangers held a small lead through most of it. The visitors extended their lead to 24-20 before the Mavs clawed back within 24-23 on
Macy Wood/Scoville block before Smith was able to keep the Rangers alive with ninth kill of the third set.
The Mavs were unphased and dominated the fourth set as Scoville recorded a .727 hitting percentage on 11 errorless swings in the final frame.
The Mavs finished the match with a 58-41 advantage in total kills and had a small 6-4 edge in service aces. Both teams had six blocks while the Rangers had a slight 69-66 advantage in total digs.
The Mavs will conclude the regular season in South Dakota next weekend playing at Black Hills State in Spearfish on Friday at 6 p.m. before heading to Rapid City to face South Dakota Mines on Saturday (Nov. 15) at 4 p.m.
They will be looking to lock up one of the eight spots in the following week's RMAC Tournament and potentially a top-4 seed, which would give the Mavs the right to host a quarterfinal round match up on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
