Gritty Mavs rally to hold off Westminster

GRAND JUNCTION Colo. — Tough serving and dominant plays at the net when it counted the most carried the No. 25 Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to a four-set victory over Westminster on Friday night in RMAC regional pod play.

Trailing 21-15 in the fourth set, the Mavericks got the serve back on a kill by Emma Luce, one of the 15 for the redshirt sophomore, tying her career high. Luce, Henley Madsen (11 kills) and Aesha Alrashed scored consecutive kills on Ashlyn Tafoya's serve to cut it to 21-19. After a Westminster timeout, the Griffins scored, but Luce came right back with another kill to make it 22-20.

Luce then went to the service line and closed it out with five straight points, including a service ace to get it to match point.

A bad set by Westminster gave the Mavs their third win in four matches at Brownson Arena the past two weeks, 25-12, 22-25, 26-24, 25-22.

Included in that final scoring run was a double block by Alrashed and Madsen, one of 10 total blocks for CMU, which improved to 9-4. Friday's win and Tuesday's win over Western Colorado do not count in conference standings.

The final set had five ties and five lead changes, which was on par for the final three sets. There were only four ties in the first set and no lead changes, with CMU dominating, hitting .212 to Westminster's .000. For the match, the Mavs hit .158, the Griffins .141, but CMU came up big in crunch time.

Sadie Scoville finished with seven kills, as did Coco Barnett.

Tafoya registered 21 assists while Addie Swanson added 18.   Libero Addison Wright finished with a season-high 25 digs while Scoville added 16.  Wright also had four of the Mavs' season-high 12 service aces, CMU's highest single-match total since 2022.

Colorado Mesa returns to conference play next week, playing at Western Colorado st 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 10) and at Fort Lewis at 4 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 11).
