Grand Junction, CO.- Colorado Mesa hosted University of Colorado Colorado Springs for a two game series for their home opener.
The Mavericks hosted UCCS for their home opener on Friday. The Mavs would pack the barn and light it up for the home crowd early as Freshman Brian White would open the scoring 5 minutes in, less than two minutes later Sophomore Connor Hassenstab would add to the lead. Freshmen Marcus Ray and Jacob Roggie would also score in the first period to give the Mavs a 4-0 lead. In the second Junior Brayden Wair added to the lead off of the rush along with Senior Larry Simons scoring off of a rebound to give the Mavs a 6-0 lead. UCCS would score off of a weird shot but the Mavs would take a 6-1 lead into the third period. In the third Simons would score on the powerplay off of a great feed from Senior Ethan Gotchey, Freshman Dylan Sowa would also score a powerplay tally. Freshman Leo VanValkenburgh would score his first career CMU goal on a loose puck in front of the net. Ray and Sowa would both score their second of the game to lift the Mavs lead to 11-1. The Mavs would take game 1 11-1.
Game 2 would be cancelled less than 2 hours before the game due to UCCS injury issues. Instead the Mavs would play a competitive intersquad scrimmage with some alumni. The game was hard fought but ultimately the Mavs team Captain Ethan Gotchey would help team grey win with a hattrick. Team grey would win 6-2.
The Mavs will play Colorado College on the road next week before an off week. The Mavs will host the Colorado School of Mines on November 7th!
