AUSTIN, Texas— Ten Colorado Mesa University track & field standouts, the maximum number possible, were named to the College Sports Communicators NCAA Division II Academic All-District® squads.
Five of them Mavs' honorees are repeat selections in
Jordan Burnett,
Josie Coffey,
Justin Thompson, and
Heather Yackey. The Mavs' first time honorees are
Kevin DeGree,
Quentin Hartel,
Logan Hafey,
Augustine Hancock,
Brooke Miller and
Beau Thornton.
Burnett, Coffey and Thompson, who were all Academic All-America® selections in previous years and have also been selected to appear on the national ballot for this year's Academic All-America® awards that will be voted upon by CSC members and announced on July 9 and 10.
Under revised program regulations for 2024, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50, be a sophomore both academically and athletically and have been ranked in the top 50 of the region in at least one individual event to qualify for Academic All-District recognitions.
Institutions were limited to five men's nominations and five women's nominations.
Burnett, a junior from Fairplay, Colorado, was a Second Team CSC Academic All-American® last year. She holds a 3.94 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. She was regionally ranked in six individual and eight total events this year and earned four All-RMAC certificates while setting new school records in both the outdoor 400 meters (55.39) and 4x100-meter relay (45.71). She also earned two All-America honors and two RMAC titles in 2023 while begin named as that year's RMAC Indoor Freshman of the Year.
Coffey, a senior from Lakewood, Colorado, is hoping to earn her third successive Academic All-America® honor. She holds a 4.00 GPA and is majoring in political science. The high jumper was named as the NCAA Elite 90 Winner at last month's NCAA Division II Championships, where she finished fifth to garner her fifth career All-America honor. She was then later named as the USTFCCCA South Central Region Field Athlete of the Year and has won five RMAC titles in her career, including during both the 2024 indoor and outdoor campaigns.
DeGree, a redshirt sophomore mechanical engineering major from Big Bear Lake, California holds a 3.91 GPA and was ranked in the region's top 50 in three events, including at the No. 22 spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:35.68.
Hancock, a sophomore from Red Cliff, Colorado, holds a 3.79 GPA in her criminal justice program. She had a breakout 2024 campaign winning the RMAC title and qualifying for her first NCAA Division II Championship in the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 55.88 meters (183 feet, 4 inches), which ranked her second in the region.
Hartel, a redshirt sophomore from Erie, Colorado, holds a 3.92 GPA and is majoring in computer science. He was regionally-ranked in the 200 meters during both the indoor and outdoor seasons and had a season-best time of 21.72 seconds in that discipline.
Hafey, a sophomore nursing major from Craig, Colorado, holds a 3.60 GPA was ranked 17th in the region in the indoor heptathlon with his score of 4,451 points and amongst the top 50 in six other disciplines.
Miller, a redshirt sophomore from Homer, Alaska is a nursing major with a 3.95 GPA. She was ranked tenth in the region in the 800 meters with a school-record time of 2:09.79 and earned All-RMAC honors in that event.
Thompson, a native of Carbondale, Colorado holds a 4.00 GPA in both his graduate athletic training and undergraduate exercise science majors. He has earned a multitude of awards as the most decorated Maverick track & field athlete in program history for both his academic and athletic prowess, earning a CMU track & field record seven career all-America honors in the jumping events including in the long jump in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2024. He has also been named as the NCAA Elite 90 Winner twice and as the RMAC's Academic Athlete of the Year five times. He will be gunning for his fourth straight Academic All-America® honor, which would further extend his program record.
Thornton hails from Grand Junction, Colorado. He is an exercise science major with a 3.96 GPA and was ranked in the region's top 50 in four sprinting events, including the 60 meters with a season-best time of 6.96 seconds. He was also named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's All-Academic First Team during the outdoor season.
Yackey, a junior fitness and health promotion major from Greeley, Colorado, was also named to the Academic All-District® squad last year. She holds a perfect 4.00 GPA and claimed the bronze medal in the discus throw at the RMAC Outdoor Championships, an event that she was ranked seventh in regionally at 46.77 meters (153-5).
The 2024 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track & Field teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the track, in the field, and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes men's track & field honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
