KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team slipped back to .500 as they were downed by the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers and the Rockhurst University Hawks in a pair of Friday afternoon match-ups here at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The Lopers, who featured three nationally-ranked and five regionally-ranked players in their lineup, won all of the completed matches in an abbreviated 4-0 win before the Mavericks came up short in many of the tight matches while falling 6-1 to the Hawks.
CMU is now 4-4 on the season while UNK (3-0) and RU (2-0) remained undefeated.
Against the Lopers,
Makenna Livingston dominated the second set of her No. 2 singles match against national No. 49 Fabiana Gomez but eventually went down by a 6-4 margin in the third as the Lopers clinched the dual.
They also won the No. 5 and 6 singles matches and had taken the first set of the other three matches that were left unfinished to save time on a busy day of indoor action.
The Lopers also won both completed doubles matches while Livingston and partner
Issy Coman were at 3-all in their top-flight match against Alexis Bernthal and Tanya Midzi.
In the ensuing dual, the Mavericks ran out of steam as the Hawks pulled out a 7-5 decision at No. 2 doubles to seize the doubles point after the teams had split 6-2 decisions in the other two flights.
The Hawks also won a pair of 3-set singles matches and also claimed two set tie-breakers and two other 7-5 set decisions to claim the overall victory.
Coman and Livingston were victorious in doubles for the Mavs as they defeated Sofia Valdespino and Zuzanna Szmyd at No. 1.
Devyn Rodriguez won the Mavs' lone singles match, claiming a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) thriller over Marina Magai in the third flight. The Maverick freshman became the first CMU player to reach 10 singles wins on the season and improved to 6-1 in duals with her third consecutive win.
Coman and Livingston have also won their last three doubles decisions and are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in duals this season.
The Mavericks will face another tough challenge as they wrap up a 4-match weekend against 17
th-ranked Northwest Missouri State on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain).
